Historia
In the remote wildness of Egdon Heath, the crossed love affairs and marriages of a small group of people are played out against the background of nature’s beauty and indifference to mankind. Through a series of vivid incidents and encounters, The Return of the Native moves in a relentless drive towards tragedy, as the plans and dreams of the lovers miscarry, defeated by chance, or destiny or self-deception. In their unhappy stories, Hardy gives us a powerful dramatization of his bleak philosophy, his belief in man’s helplessness before the malevolence of the universe.

I could take it or leave the plot, but Hardy does write well. I think I much prefer Tess, however.

Historia
Gabriel García Márquez’s most political novel is the tragic story of General Simón Bolívar, the man who tried to unite a continent. General Simon Bolívar, known in six Latin American countries as the Liberator, is one of the most revered heroes of the western hemisphere; in García Márquez’s brilliant reimagining, he is magnificently flawed as well. The novel follows Bolívar as he takes his final journey in 1830 down the Magdalena River toward the sea, revisiting the scenes of his former glory and lamenting his lost dream of an alliance of American nations.

Not a thrilling ride, but well written

For the historian, but not for the fan of literature: I read it because I had heard much of it, but found it to be a little more than acceptable.

Excellent narrator; as a French speaker, I was pleased to hear such confident and (mostly) correct handling of the French pronunciations.

The Soul of Man Under Socialism

Historia
"The Soul of Man under Socialism" is an 1891 essay by Oscar Wilde, following his conversion to anarchist philosophy after having read the works of the philosopher Peter Kropotkin. Propounding a libertarian socialist worldview, Wilde argues that - under capitalism - most people are forced to spoil their lives through an unhealthy altruism trying to solve the social problems caused by capitalism, instead of developing their true talents. He did not object to altruism per se, but was concerned about its misapplication in a way that does not address the root of the problem.

Ok narration, intriguing text. Good listening both for politics fans and Wilde fans alike. I wonder if Wilde would’ve been more of a distributist…

Historia
In this remarkable novel, Mauriac brings his extraordinary talent for probing the inmost core of the human character to what is arguably the most exciting theme in the world: the battle for the human soul. In all of literature there can be few more appalling studies of a soul devoured by pride and avarice, corroded by hatred.

This book was assigned (in French) for one of my French classes. I skimmed through it. How I wish I would’ve paid more attention to it now, after hearing it in English. A beautiful story of hope for even the most wayward of souls.

Read this book. It’s beautiful beyond words. I’ve read it three times already and am consistently blown away by the elaborate plot, wonderfully varied and realistic characters, superb dialogue, and above all the Dostoyevsky’s fine understanding of the human condition.

Historia
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

The details of this book can at first be arresting to someone unfamiliar with the Arab Revolt; however, Lawrence’s superbly literary narration sweeps the reader through Arabia effortlessly. A great man, and a mystery even to himself.
