The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Historia
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

Would have been better with a professional narrator.
Revisado: 01-01-23
These books are the ones that people either think are great or they hate it, as reflected in the great divide within our country. I’m in the middle. But first, I had to get past Eric Metaxes’ narration. He over-dramatized pregnant pauses to the point that they came across condescendingly didactic. I felt like I was being treated like a 5-year old, being lectured by a father. Once I could get past that, I could listening to what he said.
I think Eric is spot on in his comparison of today’s church to that of pre-Nazi Germany and the consequences there of. His points on our emphasis in evangelism and not making waves so as not to destroy witnessing opportunities is a bullseye. I’ve been in churches where I was criticized (in 2012 & 2016) for my political social media postings from the pulpit for these reasons. (Though not by name, it was a small church and everyone knew who he was talking about.).
My largest problem with the book is the solution posed; that we all get political. Though he didn’t use the name, he was essentially saying that we should all join the Christian Nationalist movement. But I’ve learned over the past couple of decades that the Christian Nationalist movement is a dead end laid out by Satan. It is focusing the church on the ways of the world and its means to accomplish the goal. It draws us into the partisan politics, where the ethical church is at a disadvantage and is being cooped. Not to overlook that there is evil in both parties and thus no ethical position to support a party. Eric ends the book with the question, “What will you do?” He then list a selection of worldly means to be involved.
What is the solution? We be The Church, as described in the Bible, with the power given to us by the Holy Spirit. In Ephesians 4:11-12, 1 Corinthians 12 and in Romans 12, the Bible describes how the Church operates. Each person leads BOLDLY according to their gifts. It doesn’t say all go out and be prophets in politics. Some should, if they are so gifted. Some go out into the community and boldly address in service the issues that end up in the political world. Some use their hospitality to assist in fund raising events for ethical future leaders. Some should consider being community leaders. Just boldly be the church in power.
The church should focus first on their community, where they have the most influence, and not on national politics. If things are solved at the local level, the beast at the national level starves. But most of all, everyone should be on their knees in prayer, praying against evil. Not, “Oh Lord, please help us.” Pray that evil be exposed for what it is, that the Lord’s army be engaged against the powers of darkness. You are the forward spotter calling in close air support (CAS) from above. Illuminate the targets for the angels to battle.
Eric points towards Christian Nationalism. The Bible points a different way.

Historia
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

Slow starter
Revisado: 06-30-22
I almost gave up on this at the third or fourth chapter. I’m glad I didn’t. What made me almost want to give up was two dimensional characters and a very stereotypical plot structure. Even to the end, this book really didn’t surprise me as to what was coming next. This book is not going to mentally challenge you. But it was enjoyable. The author does have a skill at writing adventure novels with action.

No Jelly Bellies

What keeps us from getting a five star rating? Not one mention of Jelly Bellies on the presidents desk. Is that significant? You cannot captures the true essence of Reagan’s personality unless you understood the Jelly Bellies.
Other than that, it was very good.

Historia
On the fourth of July, 1942, four Allied ships traversing the Arctic separated from their decimated convoy to head further north into the ice field of the North Pole, seeking safety from Nazi bombers and U-boats in the perilous white maze of ice floes, growlers, and giant bergs. Despite the risks, they had a better chance of survival than the rest of Convoy PQ-17, a fleet of 35 cargo ships carrying $1 billion worth of war supplies to the Soviet port of Archangel - the limited help Roosevelt and Churchill extended to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin to maintain their fragile alliance.

A lot of chaff
Revisado: 02-01-22
This book takes a good, very short story and stretches it out into multiple chapters. There is a lot of context provided that has nothing to do with the story of the convoy. There is even a significant part of a final chapter and talks about global warming and the effects on the ice today of the region where the ships went. All this is unnecessary.

I forgot how much I enjoyed this book
Revisado: 04-25-18
I read this book in the 70s in high school. I remember enjoying it then, but I think I enjoyed it even more this time around. The performance with the different voices enhanced the story. Highly recommend this for anyone.
