Another Great Book in the Arcane Casebook Series

This book, like all the others in this series, is the perfect blend of Detective Noir and Urban Fiction. This book sees Alex temporarily unable to work magic himself, depending on the magic of his friends and Sorsha to help him solve three cases. It's fast paced and fun, with lots of witty dialog and fun noir tropes. it's also one of the first times that s book has made me crave a hot dog.

This is an excellent book. Good story, great character development, good pacing. And in general, the narration is really good... with the significant exception of the extremely jarring, incredibly annoying, and completely unnecessary "system voice". I'm not sure who's idea this was, but I came very close to returning this book after the 20th time the word HERO was randomly shouted out in a monotone voice in the middle of an otherwise normal sentence.

I'm always a bit wary when it comes to an author's sophomore series, but that wariness was entirely misplaced when it comes to The Inheritance of Magic. The characters are great, the magic system is interesting and well developed, the story is engaging, and the setting is just incredibly well written. in his forward, the author says that he hopes to spend the next decade or so in the world, and I am hoping to spend the next decade right along with him.

If you've reached this point in the series, you already know how good it is. These books are always fun and funny, and the narrator is excellent. If you haven't read the series yet, then start with book one and know that I envy you the experience of listening to these books for the first time.

Kink shaming and homophobic.

This book kink shames like a 60 year old church lady at a Right wing convention. This book heavily implies that only hyper-masculine super jocks who like their lazy boys old and mangled, their steak rare, and their whiskey straight are acceptable as gay men. The writing is mediocre. Descriptions are overly complicated. The author keeps in introducing names and relationships that have little or nothing to do with the story at hand. As a masculine gay man, I found the first quarter of the him to be incredibly cringy and vaguely gross.

I loved this book. While a bit grittier and a bit more explicit than Ms. Maslo's other books, this retained the same fantastic character building and just barely concealed laugh out loud humor that seem to be a trademark of her writing. The characters here are just the right amount of morally ambiguous to make them feel real, while also being just decent enough that you can't help but cheer them on. And at least once a day since finishing this book, I've muttered the phrase "murder twink" to myself, and started laughing silently to myself.

Fantastic light fantasy with a MM twist

Ms. Maslow writes some incredibly fun and light hearted fantasy disguised as MM romance, and this book isn't an exception to that. If Robert Asprin or Craig Shaw Gardner were to write MM romance, this would be it.

Good Plot, Lots of Problems

So overall, the first two books of this series are pretty entertaining. But there are some significant issues.
The flaws are technical ones, but they can be distracting. First, this author never uses contractions. At all. And it is distracting. Second, this series suffers greatly from a lack of continuity editing. There are at least a half dozen continuity major continuity errors, and dozens of minor ones. Some of these are apparently intentional retcons by the author, although none really seem necessary. Third, some of the characters and plot points just don't make a lot of sense. Characters either have far too much knowledge and power, or are in positions that should give them significant authority... But are apparently helpless.
That said, I'll certainly be listening to the third book when it comes out.

While this is the story of a police detective, it's not the usual sort of detective story. While there is mention of crime and the people who commit it, mostly this book is about the detective who wrote it, and mostly those parts of him that don't involve the detecting.
It is a collection of lyrically beutiful essays on the most mundane subjects granted relavance by way of the writers keen wit and gentle humor.
