collection of New Yorker articles, some fantastic
Revisado: 12-10-23
Like most collections of previously published work, this is a mixed bag. Keefe is a good writer and researcher, and all these stories were very well done. He's also a good narrator of his own work. My problem was that I wasn't that interested in the subjects of each of them. Most of these pieces are excellent: his famous piece on El Chapo, the Anthony Bourdain portrait, the piece about Mark Burnett and Trump's relationship; the gripping tale of Astrid Holladeer and her brother, and the hilarious story of the trade in fake vingate wines. Some of the stories seem a little out of place given the book's title, but on their own each of the articles is clearly good investigative journalism.

Historia
In the summer of 1986, two tragedies rocked Oklahoma City. Six movie-theater employees were killed in an armed robbery while one inexplicably survived. Then, a teenage girl vanished from the annual state fair. Neither crime was ever solved. Twenty-five years later, the reverberations of those unsolved cases quietly echo through survivors’ lives. A private investigator in Vegas, Wyatt’s latest inquiry takes him back to a past he’s tried to escape - and drags him deeper into the harrowing mystery of the movie house robbery that left six of his friends dead.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to. The story held many surprises, characters were well-developed and fairly complex for a book of this kind. The narration was also very well done.

Single father Todd is relaxing at the beach with his son, Anthony, when he catches sight of a man approaching from the water’s edge. As the man draws closer, Todd recognizes him as Jack, who bullied Todd relentlessly in their teenage years but now seems overjoyed to have “run into” his old friend. Jack suggests a meal to catch up. And can he spend the night? What follows is a fast-paced story of obsession and cunning. As Jack invades Todd’s life, pain and intimidation from the past unearth knife-edge suspense in the present.

great book, narration less so
Revisado: 12-10-23
This is an unsettling book that I found I had to keep listening to even as I dreaded what was going to happen next. Very suspensful. However, it took a long time to get used to the author's narration, which was like listening to someone at an open-mic poetry reading. He seemed more into the sound of the words than telling a story and representing the characters as distinct people. I found it very distracting.

I was excited to listen to this one because I thought it would be a commentary on the true-crime phenomenon, but it seemed more like a romance novel than a mystery or a thriller

But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. great and necessary reporting
Revisado: 10-26-20
This is a fascinating podcast that goes beyond the investigation of this one bizarre case to analyze the process of online radicalizatiion of young men more generally. It includes interviews with academic experts on extremism and the family members of Devon Athurs and his neo-Nazi room-mates, whom he murdered. All of the families seemed shocked to discover that their teenaged kids were becoming Nazis by interacting with far-right online activists.

Surprising Find for Ghost story and horror fans
Revisado: 12-09-19
I didn't know anything about M.R. James when I picked this from monthly audible originals choices, but after listening to these i read a bit more from him and decided that he's a bit like Poe in the way he builds a dark atmosphere and uses foreshadowing to create dread in the reader. This collection is fun for horror fans, a bit like listening to old-timey radio theater, and the modern "takes" on James work really well.

Shirley Jackson's _Haunting of hill House_ is deservedly considered one of the best horror stories of all time. The only question I had was whether this audio version would be good. Dunne does a wonderful job with it. I would listen to anything she narrated.

Historically-Informed Horror
Revisado: 12-09-19
This book has a little romance and a LOT of horror, AND combines all that with interesting stuff about Vodun (proper word for voodoo). She captures characters really well- young kids, old men, and of course, the mid-career woman who is at the center of the tale. The narrator is very good, though the French creole accent for the Grandmother came off a little stilted, which was the only reason I didn't give the performance 5 stars.
