Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

This is not really a fantasy novel
Revisado: 11-21-24
This book is not what it is marketed to be. It has some fantasy and magic elements but the vast majority of the book is a cliché forbidden romance with cringy dialogue and catty immature characters. About 10 percent of the book is fantastic the rest had me rolling my eyes and wishing something would happen in the plot. See my full review on good reads if youre interesed.

Historia
For the first time, the great depth and diversity of Taoist spirituality is introduced in a single, accessible manual. Taoism, known widely today through the teachings of the classic Tao Te Ching and the practices of t'ai chi and feng-shui, is less known for its unique traditions of meditation, physical training, magical practice, and internal alchemy. Covering all of the most important texts, figures, and events, this essential guide illuminates Taoism's extraordinarily rich history and remarkable variety of practice.

Fantastic starter kit but marred by warnings.
Revisado: 12-17-22
I really enjoyed this book overall. The information is presented in a logical and is easy to understand. If you have a passing interest in Chinese history it's quite exciting to hear a name or period mentioned that you are slightly familiar with. The first half of the book is mostly history, while the second half is primarily practice. The history I have no critique of, but the practice I became more and more annoyed and upset with the constant reminders to "not try this at home" or without supervision of a teacher. Not sure what the authors goal was with these constant interruptions and reminders was. I understand the need to be careful and respectful of a faith and it's practices and that ALL physical activity comes with risk so warnings are understandable but an author should also respect their readership's ability to make informed and careful choices.

Historia
In "Praise of Folly", also translated as "The Praise of Folly", is an essay written in Latin in 1509 by Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam and first printed in June 1511. Inspired by previous works of the Italian humanist Faustino Perisauli De Triumpho Stultitiae, it is a satirical attack on superstitions, other traditions of European society and on the Western Church. Erasmus revised and extended his work, which was originally written in the space of a week while sojourning with Sir Thomas More at More's house in Bucklersbury in the City of London.

Pay attention
Revisado: 11-07-22
It's wonderful to have this book available and for free! It's very well done. My only criticism is that it's read by a non-native speaker of English. While her command of the English language is fantastic, her pronunciation of several phonemes is significantly different that you might need to pause a second. Eventually I was able to adapt but it made the book far more work to listen to.
If you are unfamiliar with this work I highly suggest either reading the Greek classics or having an easy way to reference the many names come up.
Enjoy

In this new recording, Paapa Essiedu breathes new life into the classic tale. Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy follows a respectable London lawyer as he investigates the strange relationship between his old friend Dr Henry Jekyll and the evil Edward Hyde. Its sensitive portrayal of man's dual nature is moving, beautiful and terrifying in equal measure.

In The Truth about Muhammad, New York Times best-selling author and Islam expert Robert Spencer offers an honest and telling portrait of the founder of Islam - perhaps the first such portrait in half a century - unbounded by fear and political correctness, unflinching, and willing to face the hard facts about Muhammad's life that continue to affect our world today.

Too many assumptions
Revisado: 10-16-21
The author of this book is clearly writing from a biased and angry point of view. The book Is now so dated that all of his little jabs or "just so" adages relevant to the time of it's writing now seem petty and over simplified. This book is less about Muhammad as a biography and more a roast of what he said and did and how it is applied to the Islamophobic and reactionary world of 2005. The author claims to be simply stating what is said and presenting facts. I disagree. I think his tone of writing clearly show's his true feelings. I refuse to give any credence to a book that simply rants about problems and fails to present any solution or closure. If he wants to paint the world in black and white that's his business. I prefer to live in the real world.

Not really what the title says it to be.
Revisado: 11-10-20
I'm a huge fan of the Forgotten Realms. I was super excited about this book. I gave it my all but listening to it just drained me. The title of the book is misleading in that you spend most of the book inside the mind of Elminister and him remembering other people. There is very little hell related content, and very little actual story. The book has a huge cast of characters or memories of characters so if, like me, you're a fan, it's fun to see these characters again, but for a novice to the FR world I imagine it would be extremely frustrating. I'm sorry to say Ed. This one was a flop :*(

For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

Never took off
Revisado: 03-10-19
I went into this having no expectations and so I tried to listen with an open mind. I suffered through the first 3 hours of listening in the hopes that it would pick up. I grew tired of the over excited and juvenile expressiveness of the characters. I was also bored with the lack of connection and motivation between flat and uninteresting characters. This being said, there is quite a bit of excellent creativity, but the presentation doesn't feel artistic, more like the author simply presented their notes on the world and explained a spreadsheet as opposed to making a rich world full of cool things that are then regulated by these complex rules and systems. At about the 4 hour mark there was indeed a pick up as the characters start to meet for the first time, but it doesn't last, as this then leads to further explanations of more systems.
I finished the book and feel as if I've read the twitch stream blog of how to raid a wow dungeon as fast and effectively as possible. I think Dakota Krout would have better luck in game design than in literature.
Vikas Adam does give it his all thought. I was impressed with his range of contrast between male and female voices. I would listen to a another book narrated by him outside of the Divine Dungeon series.

Historia
Elijah Wald is one of the leading popular music critics of his generation. In The Blues, Wald surveys a genre at the heart of American culture. It is not an easy thing to pin down. As Howlin' Wolf once described it, "When you ain't got no money and can't pay your house rent and can't buy you no food, you've damn sure got the blues." It has been defined by lyrical structure, or as a progression of chords, or as a set of practices reflecting West African "tonal and rhythmic approaches", using a five-note "blues scale". Wald sees blues less as a style than as a broad musical tradition within a constantly evolving pop culture.

Great flow and golden nuggets!
Revisado: 11-14-17
Blues was always playing in my house for a long as I can remember. My father constantly talked about it and tried to impress it's importance on me. His lessons went mostly unheeded, or so I thought. This book was absolute fantastic in content, progression and style. The names presented were mostly familiar and I had a grand old time following along with youtube videos of the artists. The Narrator has the perfect voice. Low, cool and when he quotes lyrics, I got the chills. I'm hoping to find more of his narration.
After reading this book I have a new found appreciation and explosion of love for the blues!
Time will tell but this book may have chanced my life. It has certainly helped me see my father in a new, cooler, light!

At the heart of these stories, as with all the best of Lovecraft’s work, is the belief that the Earth was once inhabited by powerful and evil gods, just waiting for the chance to recolonise their planet. Cthulhu is one such god, lurking deep beneath the sea until called into being by cult followers who – like all humans – know not what they do.

The audio book listens like a radio show with intro and outro music that I thought was a nice touch. Excellent voice acting by William Roberts! I'm inclined to go and find more of his work. A great place to start for people just getting into Lovecraft.
