Promised Land - I Understand
Revisado: 05-23-22
President Obama’s narration of his Presidency is not to be missed. I finally understand more about events that happened during his Presidency. The way he explained the mortgage crisis, Bin Laden, and the Persian Gulf war really enlightened me.

Historia
Black Americans have long been shackled to the Democrats. Seeing no viable alternative, they have watched liberal politicians take the Black vote for granted without pledging anything in return. In Blackout, Owens argues that this automatic allegiance is both illogical and unearned. She contends that the Democrat Party has a long history of racism and exposes the ideals that hinder the Black community’s ability to rise above poverty, live independent and successful lives, and be an active part of the American dream.

Historia
Sophia Chang is a badass of the music industry. As the daughter of Korean immigrants in predominantly white suburban Vancouver, she grew up shunning the “model minority” myth. Armed with a fierce sense of independence, she moved to New York City and infiltrated the world of hip-hop, yet remained mostly in the shadows of the artists she supported. With her debut memoir, Sophia Chang is finally ready to grab the mic for herself.

She’s Bad and She Knows It!
Revisado: 08-30-21
I admit that the provocative title made me want to read this book. Ms Chang took us on her journey through hip-hop. An Asian woman making it big behind the scene was fascinating. It shows that music in all forms is universal. Music makes strange bedfellows. Speaking of that, I’m glad Ms Chang made it a point not to be a groupie. She kept things professional and that made me appreciate her story more.

The performances were ok but the story got a little weird. It veered away from being a mystery thriller into science fiction later in the story. I couldn't quite pull it together.

Historia
Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Cicely Tyson the GOAT!
Revisado: 05-31-21
I learned so much about Cicely Tyson and the history of being a movie star in Hollywood during such difficult a time in American history. She was smart enough to use her talent and wit to build an amazing career until she left us to go to her heavenly home.
I loved hearing about her friendships with the other Black actresses who were also famous at that time. Diahann Carroll, Ruby Dee and Aretha Franklin were mentioned. At times the book was very serious and at times I laughed out loud!
Her relationship with Miles Davis was also an interesting highlight. Now I understand that although she was a known as a "good girl", she was able to love such a flawed man.
Fans of Ms Tyson will love hearing about her friendships with Viola Davis, Tyler Perry and and Oprah Winfrey. Her life was an inspiration.

The daughter of immigrants and civil rights activists, Vice President Kamala Harris was raised in an Oakland, California, community that cared deeply about social justice. I enjoy learning about people before their ascendance to power. Then- Senator Harris tells us about her childhood and early political life. I appreciated learning about her mother's influence on her. She gives insight into politics in California.
It's an enjoyable read especially if you like to see history unfold in real time. I hope she plans to write another book after her term (terms!) in the White House.

Historia
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

As Usual Mariah is on Fire!
Revisado: 12-14-20
This is a rags-to-riches story, a triumph over tragedy story and a story of survival all wrapped into one book. Mariah's narration was sad, funny and perfect. Her upbringing was such a nightmare. Her parents and her siblings clearly need intervention from a family counseling agency. I'm glad Mariah held on to her faith. It is clear to me that God brought her through! Her story could have ended the same way as Michael Jackson's or Whitney Houston's. Thank God that it didn't. I now understand the meaning of Mariah Carey.

Speaking of Chicago
Revisado: 11-21-20
Since I am born and raised in Chicago, I always enjoy reading stories that are based in Chicago. I related well to Dr. Smith's descriptions of our city streets and neighborhoods. The story was engaging and entertaining. But one thing irked me throughout the audiobook. The narrator kept mispronouncing the name of one of our city's major thoroughfares. Halsted in Chicago is pronounced hall-sted not hal-sted. The mispronunciation kept throwing me off. Ian Smith should have known better and corrected that before the final recording of the audiobook. Other than that, the book was great.

Their stories, taken together, help reconstruct the era of the Civil War with a greater depth and complexity by adding women's experiences and voices to their male counterparts.

Behind Every Good Civil War Hero...
Revisado: 09-10-20
Each of these women were more interesting than their husbands. They had to endure oppression for being female. They were not allowed to have an opinion on slavery or anything else unless they agreed with their husbands. Thank God that didn't stop them. I learned so much about the Civil War and the Confederacy.

Fearless Teaching is a stirring and audacious jaunt around the world that peeks - with the eyes of one of America's most seasoned educators - into places you will surely never see on your own. Some are disappearing. It is a bit like playing hooky from school. You will travel to the Swiss Alps, Korea, Navajo territory, an abandoned factory in Missouri, the Holy Land, the Great Rift Valley, the schools of Cuba, the ocean waves, and the human subconscious - oh, and Disneyland.

This book is so topical. It is very obvious in the age of COVID-19 that we must reimagine education in this country. This is a good roadmap to get started.
