Historia
The remote island of Masquapaug has not seen a dragon in many generations—until fifteen-year-old Anequs finds a dragon’s egg and bonds with its hatchling. Her people are delighted, for all remember the tales of the days when dragons lived among them and danced away the storms of autumn, enabling the people to thrive. To them, Anequs is revered as Nampeshiweisit—a person in a unique relationship with a dragon.

Ok, Probably won't read the sequel
Revisado: 02-06-25
I'll start with the narrator. She was good at some voices. But her male voices were often done with a clenched jaw and from the back of her throat so they sounded strangled.
Now the story... I wish a good editor had helped the author cut at least 1/3 of the story out. The premise of a native person coming to the 'civilized' land for learning and then finding she has other ways of seeing things is good. But she was so self-righteous that about 3/4 of the way into the book I decided I didn't really like her. She is only 15 but back talks to EVERYONE! Her roommate who is the only other female at the school-this is in their first meeting. Other students, teachers and eventually even the Jarl or King-like figure of the country. She is always 100% sure she is right, they are wrong. That her people know more and are better. There are NO positives about the other cultures or peoples unless they are disabled, neurodivergent, indentured or of a minority religion.
The steampunk aspect was interesting, but honestly could have been omitted from the story all together.
The names for the cities, people, academics this lore and that lorem, skizels and whatever it is the dragons are supposed to make just became a big confusing mess that made it impossible to remember anything.
This is supposed to be a YA book. I'm not sure what age would like this book. Late teens maybe? But many will get bogged down in the things I've mentioned.

Historia
Nancy Kranich (played by Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne of Russian Doll and Orange Is the New Black) is a night nurse on an orbiting space station. But Nancy hates her job, is sick of space, and longs to find adventure and a safe place to smoke cigarettes that won’t blow everyone up. But when Nancy gets caught up in an outer-space conspiracy involving President Kennedy, former vice-president Richard Nixon, and an intergalactic object that could change the course of history, she gets way more adventure than she bargained for.

very funny
Revisado: 12-10-22
Very funny, especially if you remember the 60s and 70s. The joke about the song MacArthur Park still cracks me up. I don't usually listen to ensemble narration, but I really enjoyed this! I actually LIKED Richard Nixon! And his secretary Rosemary.
I'm not sure I totally understood the ending, But a very clever book with a great cast. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try!

Martin and his friends discovered that their world is computer generated and that by altering the code they could alter reality. They traveled back in time to Medieval England to live as wizards. Almost everything they've done since then has, in one way or another, blown up in their faces. So of course they decide to make dragons. It does not go well.

couldn't finish
Revisado: 12-10-22
I loved books 1-3. But I couldn't finish this. And I rarely don't finish a book. Especially one I've used my credits on! It just dragged and the situations weren't interesting or funny.
Sorry Scott, you should have just stopped after book 3.

Historia
Ever since Martin Banks and his fellow computer geeks discovered that reality is just a computer program to be happily hacked, they've been jaunting back and forth through time, posing as medieval wizards and having the epic adventures that other nerds can only dream of having. But even in their wildest fantasies, they never expected to end up at the mercy of the former apprentice whom they sent to prison for gross misuse of magic and all-around evil behavior.

Historia
Two thousand people go missing in Alaska every year. They vanish in the middle of mountain footraces, on fishing boats in the Bering Sea, on small planes in the Bush. Now a geologist known for going walkabout with his rock hammer has disappeared from the Suulutaq Mine in the Park. Was it deliberate? An accident? Foul play? Kate Shugak may be the only person who can find out. But for the fact that Kate, too, is among the missing....

Love Kate, not sure about narrator
Revisado: 01-25-18
I love Kate Shugak even though I think the earlier books were better than the more recent ones.
I'm not sure I would have chosen this narrator for the series though. I see that she has narrated most of them. I find her kind of aggressive in her reading, and her voice is a bit high pitched. and a bit too fast. Kate has a deep raspy voice because of her throat injury and things move slowly in the park... so I think someone with a deeper slower voice would suit better. But it's not enough to make me stop listening!

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

A gem!

A quiet story but so we'll written that I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. Lovely wry humor and excellent character development. The narrator was awesome and brought out subtleties that are probably lost to the average reader.

Historia
John Hart creates a literary thriller that is as suspenseful as it is poignant, a riveting murder mystery layered beneath the southern drawl of a humble North Carolina lawyer. When Work Pickens finds his father murdered, the investigation pushes a repressed family history to the surface and he sees his own carefully constructed facade begin to crack.

Imitation Prince of Tides
Revisado: 06-14-16
This book is a frustratingly poor attempt to imitate "Prince of Tides" by Pat Conroy. The titles are even similar-get it? A poor confused southern man with an over-bearing father and sainted mother, a sister with a history of mental illness. But John Hart is no Pat Conroy. All the characters are either too shallow or too unpleasant to care about. As another reviewer has said-the first half of the book is a whole lot of whining from the main character, who I never really liked. The action does pick up in the second half, but it didn't really save the book for me. I guess some people like his writing style-I found it very over done. So for the overall story I give it a 2-2 1/2.
Now about the narration: this narrator also does the CJ Box novels. His diction has a very strange pattern in which he emphasizes single words within sentences that make everything sound sinister and suspicious. Sometimes I can tune it out, other times it really annoys me. "he walked into the ROOM and saw a TABLE, with RED chairs. " [made up example-but you get the point.]
The combination of overworked writing, sad and unpleasant characters and the wierd narration made me stop listening about half way. Instead I got a paper copy of it from my local library and skimmed through it to find out 'who did it'. I will not be reading any John Hart in the future, and I will probably try to avoid this narrator.

This is NOT Louise Penny Neveda Barr or CJ Box
Revisado: 02-23-16
I like outdoors mysteries and chose this because of the strong reviews, but I almost regret having listened to this at all. It is overwhelmingly bleak with so much foreshadowing of more gloom and tragedy that you wonder why anyone would visit Glacier Park let alone live near there. The characters are quite superficially developed, and most of them are offputting in one way or another.
The writing is seriously overdone and would have benefited from some strong editing. Instead of saying the sky is gray, its gray with foreshadowing of doom and pain etc.
I like R C Bray, but the material he had to work with here, plus the direction, made this one big long gray monotone of unpleasantness. And then, all of a sudden its wrapped up, tada! and I guess the main guy is now going to be ok after 24 chapters of his constant angst and panic attacks?
I seriously wanted this book to be over after about the 3rd chapter but I stuck it out. I would NOT recommend this to anyone who I share books with. Definitely not going to read more by this author.
