OK Light Read

This crime novel was a bit too cute for me. Entertaining, but just not to my taste—I prefer more complex characters and a darker atmosphere.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. Perfect narration brought this world to life
Revisado: 03-31-25
Although I was not a huge fan of the film, the book got such strong reviews that I decided to give it a try. I‘d intended to listen to the Hunger Games in short segments before bedtime over a period of several weeks. Instead, I became so engrossed with the story that I could not stop listening and finished the book in three long nights. I‘m looking forward to listening to Tatiana Maslany narrate the next two books in the series. Highly recommended!

Historia
Neal Asher takes on first contact, Polity style. This original novel recounts the first contact between the aggressive Prador aliens, and the Polity Collective as it is forced to retool its society to a war footing. The overwhelming brute force of the Prador dreadnaughts causes several worlds and space stations to be overrun. Prador Moon follows the initial Polity defeats, to the first draws, and culminates in what might be the first Polity victory, told from the point of view of two unlikely heroes.

Violent and Mediocre Writing
Revisado: 03-27-25
After finishing all the available titles in Iain Bank’s Culture series, I was looking for another sci-fi series to explore. Prador Moon is short on character development but gore is described in sickening detail. The background was presented sporadically, so it was somewhat difficult to envision (or care) about this universe. I don’t think the Polity series is for me and I’ll look elsewhere. Grateful that this audiobook title was free.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Just Perfect!
Revisado: 10-09-23
I remember reading Charlotte’s Web as a young child and being impressed by its frankness. Adults certainly never discussed things like death around me, so this was unexpected, a bit thrilling and of course sad. Hearing this favorite book read by the author many so decades later has been a great pleasure. I really hope that children are still reading this.

Historia
Kathryn Scanlan’s Kick the Latch vividly captures the arc of one woman’s life at the racetrack—the flat land and ramshackle backstretch; the bad feelings and friction; the winner’s circle and the racetrack bar; the fancy suits and fancy boots; and the “particular language” of “grooms, jockeys, trainers, racing secretaries, stewards, pony people, hotwalkers, everybody”—with economy and integrity. Whittled down with a singular artistry, Kick the Latch bangs out of the starting gate and carries the listener on a careening joyride around the inside track.

Remarkable but difficult
Revisado: 04-29-23
This extraordinary novel’s language is rich, exotic and lyrical but the long-winded, improbable plot made for a difficult listen. Occasionally a passage left me stunned with its beauty but more often I was just slogging through. I’m disappointed that I didn’t enjoy this book more. Perhaps as a Westerner unaccustomed to the contradictions that India presents, I found myself struggling against the currents instead of allowing myself to be transported by the flow.

Weakest of series but worthwhile
Revisado: 03-23-23
I had mixed feelings about this book. Sometimes the plot seemed disorganized and repetitive rather than purposefully confusing. In truth some sections dragged but ultimately a moving and imaginative story. The exceptional narration brought life and warmth to the characters.

A Very Uneven Collection
Revisado: 08-10-21
Several of the stories were very original and engaging, but the rest were extremely tedious. Considering the strong reviews, I was quite disappointed. I would be hesitant to recommend this book.
