Modernly refreshing take on Don Quixote, great read
Revisado: 08-09-20
I’ll start this review with stating that I received this for free in exchange for an honest review, and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would pay for it outright. The narrator and author’s styles completed each other well. This story has several moments that caused me to laugh out loud in my car, but quite a few that are also rather heartfelt and earnest for a sad situation in modern life. The story had a quick yet well paced lead up to the end, and the characters were realistic yet very slightly “overdone” for purposes of storytelling.
I’d highly recommend this to my friends and family and I’ve already purchased the author’s other book and anxious to get started.

Historia
Are serial killers born or raised? The argument of “nature vs nurture” always has been and is still being researched to this day. The idea is simple enough: if you have had a happy childhood - but killer genes - you may go on to live a normal, happy life. If you have the wrong genetics and a bad childhood, you are a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off at any time.

Good start if you aren’t familiar with “Serial Killers 101”
Revisado: 05-03-20
Basic and quick recap of the majority of recent (1960’s and onwards) serial killers especially those in the US, which each chapter being <10 minutes. I was surprised to hear details that I’d never heard before despite being a true crime junkie! My one problem with the book was the author including a sentence or two regarding his opinion of the killers’ motives which seemed unnecessary and tacked on.
The narrator was great, although a bit slow and found myself cranking the speed up to 1.5x through most of the book. Paul Burt had a good voice and tone for the book, just needed to go a little faster in my opinion.

Fact: In September 1964, the Beatles, their private flight diverted by Hurricane Dora, made an unplanned visit to Key West. Fiction: Poolside at their motel, the Fab Four fell into conversation with a snappy-dressing local named Bert the Shirt, who listened as the band worked out a harmony to the most beautiful song he’d ever heard...and wouldn’t hear again for over half a century.

Love this series and with a great narrator!
Revisado: 05-03-20
Loved the first book Florida Straights and was excited to see that it was a series. Paradise Gig has the same great combination of fun, intrigue, and laid back style that pulls you in. The narrator added a lot of character and substance which was a welcome surprise as I had read the earlier books in hardback form versus audio.
The plot is exciting without being too outlandish, and overall a great summer (or anytime) book.

Revisado: 04-28-20
Appreciated getting to listen to these two stories back to back, and reflecting on two unique writing styles and approaches to human psyche. Haven’t listened to Siddhartha since high school and it was a good refresher. The narrator has a calm soothing voice which allows your brain a minute to review the words in your head, and I liked their style for these two pieces.

Lacked plot and relatable characters, sadly
Revisado: 04-21-20
I really wanted to like this book and it appeared to have desirable qualities: quirky characters and more of a "journey rather than the destination" feel. However I kept forgetting (or not reminded enough in the story) about the plot and it felt very wandering and not driven towards anything. If the characters had been more relatable it might have been entertain as-is, however it was a series of pathetic drunken, sexual escapades and the protagonist talking repeatedly about his penis. I'm not a prude and have loved other books in this vein/style, but "Son of a B*itch" just didn't draw me in despite restarting the book many times.
On the upside, the narrator's voice was perfect for the protagonist and he imbued a lot of life and character into something that otherwise may have been very one dimensional, so there's that. Yay for Joe Formichella.

Good intro to food addictions with practical tips
Revisado: 04-04-20
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. Good introduction to what food addiction is, and is not, and ways to identify what foods you’re possibly addicted to. The book doesn’t go into assessing why you may have an addiction (but then again it’s only 30 minutes), but does provide useful tips to manage an addiction and help lessen it and consider the impact that it has on your life. Worth the time for the food and focus replacements alone.

Excellent story ultimately about life worth living
Revisado: 01-18-20
This is a well written and realistic story about an everyday guy that can’t see past his own depression and lack of self worth to the abundance of love in the world. Although I truly liked this story, it definitely has a unique sense of humor and bite. Fair warning that it is full of drug/alcohol use and explicit sex, but more of the voyeurism of your boring neighbors half-hearted attempts rather than anything titillating.
The narrator initially seemed too monotone, but actually he perfectly conveys the tone of the protagonist’s life and flat affect, and I really liked him after the first chapter. For someone that has, or is, gone through depression or lack of self worth this book may be either difficult or refreshingly spot on.
At five hours it’s a quick listen, and touches on difficult issues and emotions that many people have gone through in life. Although I did receive this book for free in exchange for an honest review, I had this in my Audible wish list before the offer and happy to review. Very worth the time if it’s your style!

Historia
The New Mexico Territory of the 1870s - 1880s was as wild and dangerous as any part of the American west. Murders were commonplace. Corruption was the norm, and the Santa Fe Ring controlled the courts. Every man went armed and bad whiskey was commonplace, as was over-indulgence. Rustling was, for many, a way of life. But it was a way of life that threatened the honest ranchers and herdsmen of the time. Liam Clancy, Irish immigrant and recently-discharged veteran of the Union Army, had lost his young wife and unborn child to cholera. Grieving, he sold his homestead and headed west.

Good western with a unique focus on the inner monologue
Revisado: 12-31-19
I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review, and I can say that this audiobook is a positively unique experience. Usually I like westerns due to their description of the external: the arid deserts, the harsh nights, the lawlessness and then increasing legal systems. This book was unique as it focused on the journey and tribulations of the protagonist, as an immigrant facings the sadly everyday issues of loss and hardship. Having a narrator with an Irish accent lended itself well to conveying the main character, although I did have to put the book at a minimum of 1.25 speed to not be distracted by the pacing.

Simple and basic, makes for a great refresher!
Revisado: 11-24-19
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review, and I’m happy to give feedback. As a mom of a twelve month old, this offer came at a perfect time to tune up my coaching skills as we approach his toddlerhood. The tips in this book are basic parenting tips, however having a quick listen and read is excellent as a refresher as it provides not only the “how” but more importantly the “why”! It’s easy to forget that little children are trying to process their newfound communication and intellect skills, and don’t have a life of experience and reinforcements to guide them. As parents we need to help them learn discipline, patience, logic, and delayed gratification.
The accompanying PDF was great as well to explain behaviors and provide recommendations as to how to respond. Really appreciate that there’s a lot to take away in an actionable plan in a concise four hours.

In July 1965, teenagers Sylvia and Jenny Likens were left in the temporary care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a middle-aged single mother, and her seven children. The Baniszewski household was overrun with children. There were few rules and ample freedom. Sadly, the environment created a dangerous hierarchy of social Darwinism where the strong preyed on the weak. What transpired in the following three months was both riveting and chilling.

Revisado: 10-23-19
Very difficult to listen to in parts but overall a good read and highly recommend for the true crime lover. The author takes the listener through a terrifying existence for children, and it’s hard to believe what caretakers will do to children under their care. Appreciate that this is succinctly written and provides an impactful story in under four hours; worth the listen.
