Historia
Loveday Cardew prefers books to people, and her job in a York bookshop is her refuge. If you look carefully, you might see the first lines of the novels she loves the most tattooed on her skin, but there are secrets Loveday will never share. Into the bookshop come a poet, a lover, a friend and three mysterious deliveries, each of which stirs unsettling memories she wants to forget. Turning the pages of her past will be the hardest thing Loveday has ever done. Can she trust those around her?

Self absorbed main character

I couldn’t bring myself to like Loveday, too self obsessed and annoying. Not much to the story either, very slow going in the first half. The writing is good though.

Historia
I was so excited when Darcy announced out of the blue that we were flying to Kenya for our extended honeymoon. Now that we are here, I suspect he has actually been sent to fulfill another secret mission. I am trying very hard not to pick a fight about it, because after all, we are in paradise! Darcy finally confides that there have been robberies in London and Paris. It seems the thief was a member of the aristocracy and may have fled to Kenya. Since we are staying in the Happy Valley, we are well positioned to hunt for clues and ferret out possible suspects.

Narrator improved a lot
Revisado: 02-04-25
This wasn't one of my favourite stories but i have to give a shout out to Jasmine Blackborrow. She performed much better in this book (her 2nd in the series), especially capturing the Belinda voice that Katharine Kellgren created. It feels quite seamless now, and she deserves praise for it, it can't be easy taking over a star narrator's work.
I also appreciate the author keeping it accurate in terms of history, even if politically not correct.
It's also impressive to me how these aristocrats could be lording it in England, but instead went to wildest Africa and started plantations and created a comfortable life for themselves. I know they were in India for even longer, but it seems like the British population in India was huge compared to say Kenya.

Agatha Award-winning author Rhys Bowen’s charming combination of intrigue and romance blended with a touch of humor shines when performed by Audible Hall of Fame narrator Katherine Kellgren, whose deft range and impeccable accent work make it hard to believe this isn’t a multicast performance.

I love this series!
Revisado: 12-08-24
Something about Georgie is so relatable. She's broke, she's royal, she's funny, she's in love with another broke royal, and she can't stop getting in trouble. I'm on Book 7 now of this delightful series.
I feel so bad that this brilliant narrator Katherine Kellgren has passed at such a young age. She brought so much life to the characters, that's her legacy. Her successor has huge shoes to fill. I don't know her but i feel like I do, through all the adventures Georgie went through. RIP Katherine. You brought colour to my life, and i'm sure to other listeners' too.

Stop vilifying childless women
Revisado: 04-11-22
There’s a trend these days to portray mothers as angels and childless women as psychotic and evil and it really is a discrimination and social bullying that needs to stop.
Back to the book. The romantic dialogs are so basic and cringe. The male character seems like he can get it on with any female at the drop of a hat. The narrator actually managed to make the Irish accent sound bad. It was depressing and morbid to have to hear the girl as she died, or to hear her killer’s story. I’ve never heard that done before and I didn’t like it at all.
I enjoyed it overall, it was spellbinding in parts. I kept hoping for a happy ending, but then reality isn’t usually so it’s fine to read a sad story like this every so often to keep it real.

One of the very best
Revisado: 03-30-22
It’s a wild story and. My head is still spinning but the dynamic between mother and daughter isn’t that far off from reality, it’s a lot more common than you would think. For that, I appreciate the author.
An absolute must-read.
The narrator is flat out the most emotionally effusive I’ve ever heard, she should be acting. Very talented.

Very original, bravo to the author who tackled the topic so sensitively and realistically. I read it slowly because i didn’t want to leave Flora’s head and all her unique thoughts and feelings.
The narrator was nothing short of spectacular.

Disliked the unrealistic zombie body switching
This should be filled under sci-fi.
The ending was disgusting and creepy. I wish authors wouldn’t punish us after dragging us through their story for hours.
I wouldn’t recommend honestly.

This story is blissfully unaware of the maxim “he’s just not that into you”. The story wasn’t believable. But Paris and chocolate were nice backdrops.
