Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 10-23-24
This book reads more like an unbelievable sci-fi than a biography. It's like the back story to Iron Man. I enjoyed this book more than most 'for pleasure' fiction books I pick up. I kept inventing drives to go on so I could get back in my car to listen more. It's clear to me that Elon's style is one of a kind and perhaps not ideal for us all to replicate, but I did gleefully indulge in his we're going to figure this out no matter what mentality. That much is invigorating. Also, I never fully appreciated how on the brink of abject failure he has been multiple times. High risk nets high rewards. Kudos to Elon and his billions! He deserves it for thinking unlike the average.

Meaningful & Applicable
Revisado: 10-23-24
While the content is suited to meetings of any types, I found this book to be particularly helpful in planning for big multi-hour meetings where I needed to get something major accomplished. In the past, these meetings have snuck up on me until I realize a few days out that I have a looming major event that I've scheduled and have done almost nothing to prepare. This book does a great job of breaking things down into bite-sized chunks that I can execute while not feeling overwhelmed. It also made me feel empowered to do more thinking/planning myself and not try to frantically delegate the responsibility to another team member or outside consultant. Worth the read no matter what business (or not business) setting you're in for which you need to have impactful sessions with a group.

A mixed bag by definition
Revisado: 10-23-24
This is a compilation of short stories. The extension of the Silo series, buried somewhere halfway into the audio book, is excellent and had me in its grip like the other Wool/Silo books have done. Beyond that, though, I found some of the other stories bizarre and too abrupt. The common theme is that they were altogether too short for me to really get into and enjoy, which is more of a pronouncement on me as a reader that I'm not into short stories. The draw to additional chapters for the Silo series is what made me buy the book, and I will say that I was not disappointed in that regard. It is unique to hear the author's perspective after each story as to his journey surrounding the thinking and process.

Historia
What's really going into commercial dog food? The answer is horrifying. Big Kibble is big business: $75 billion globally. A handful of multinational corporations dominate the industry and together own as many as 80 percent of all brands. This comes as a surprise to most people, but what’s even more shocking is how lax the regulations and guidelines are around these products. The guidelines - or lack thereof - for pet food allow producers to include ever-cheaper ingredients and create ever-larger earnings.

Good information with heavy (stated) bias
Revisado: 06-14-22
Being new to the pet world (new puppy!), this was a very helpful book to educate me on the history of pet food and why it seems like the wild west when I go to the store or ask for food recommendations. The authors sound like they have good experience and good science to back up their assertions. That said, there is a very strong bias towards their product/brand as the major answer to the kibble problem. I do appreciate that they were very transparent throughout the book that that's who they are and what they do, so it's not like it was surprising. But it was a little off-putting when you're simply in a fact finding mission.
I learned a lot about how kibble got to be the staple go to choice for so many people and I also better understand why my own vet gave me a very nonchalant answer to just "go buy from one of the big guys because they have lots of vets on staff" when I asked for nutrition recommendations. I didn't find that advice very helpful which led me to an online search to get to this book.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the authors do come off as pretentious towards the last third of the book that this fresh food approach is the only saving grace to pet nutrition. I have no doubt that there are remarkably wonderful results from feeding your dog in this way, but there are other successful approaches, too. Think of all the mountains of research available on human nutrition over the decades and how we as humans still don't have a one-size-fits all approach to diet and lifestyle. There are some overall guiding principles (e.g. don't binge on sugar and eat more veggies) and then it's custom from there. To say that this is the best approach for your dog is asking a lot from folks on a budget.
Overall, this is a worthy read if you're a pet parent/owner (however you call yourself) and I'm grateful for folks like this trying to classify what we serve our pets as "food" and not "feed." But realize the last third of this book is a heavy handed advertisement.

Bogs down in the middle
Revisado: 02-04-21
What I loved about RP1 was that the story traversed so many iconic/nostalgic 80's references and lightly touched on them. This sequel gets a bit too narrow with some of the quest/challenges by spending a whole lot of time going quite deep into just a couple of 80's niche trivia. I won't give spoilers, but suffice to say that it's doubtful that many casual 80's fans are going to get as much out of those deep dives.
The story itself was still enjoyable and leaves you wondering at the end just the right amount. The performance/reading was enjoyable.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Fun, but shallow
Revisado: 08-16-20
This is a very fun, easy to read (hear) sci-fi. I'd say it's actually geared towards more of a teen audience except for the occasional adult language. I say this because the dialogue is pretty surface level and even conversations including adults come off as fairly juvenile. That said, it doesn't take a lot of brain power to stay caught up with the plot line, so this is the perfect easy listening for whatever multi-tasking we all do when we're digging into an Audible title. As I have a circa early 80's birthdate, I always love the many 80's pop culture references that Mr. Cline likes to weave into his stories.

Loved it...and it talked me out of starting yet
Revisado: 05-05-20
What a terrific in-depth text on the concept of rental property investing without coming across as heavy-handed know-it-all or textbook. I'm really impressed with the presentation of so much information; it is clear that the author has a lot of personal experience here. I bought the title because I was considering dabbling in rental properties to round out my financial portfolio. I may still do so some day, but this book convinced me that this is not a business for those who want to "dabble." (Or if you do, hire a management company and just expect reduced monthly cash flow.) I finished the entire thing in a few days and consider myself much better informed because of it.

Great story, but too long/political
Revisado: 05-05-20
After finishing this story and reading other reviews, I agree with a lot of them. So, I'll keep this simple and pile on and say this story could have been better by being more succinct. And as the type of American who enjoys owning a gun or two, I didn't appreciate the heavy-handed treatment of citizens who apparently go straight neo-nazi during strange times just because they have access to a weapon. That whining aside, I'll say that the story kept me intrigued all the way through the end, and I ultimately did enjoy it.

Finally a story I can enjoy with my spouse!
Revisado: 05-05-20
Other reviewers have done a much better job summarizing the story, so I'll simply focus on the fact that I'm happy to have found a story (series) that my wife enjoys just as much as I do. The character development is strong and I actually had emotional responses to some of the challenges befalling the main characters. I've listened to the first three (primary) books in this series, and have purchased the follow on titles, as well. This is a smart purchase!

More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Shallow character development
Revisado: 05-05-20
I bought this title based on the fantastic ratings it has received. I do agree with the masses that the context for the story is really cool, and as a fan of the post-apocalypse/dystopian genre, I was intrigued. I made it half way through before giving up, though. The combo of the narrator's gravely voice (which is cool...no issue there) + blunt force trauma of jumping from action sequence to action sequence make this book a bit heavy on the machismo. I'm a good ol' red blooded American guy myself, so while that doesn't necessarily annoy me, I did find the dialogue in this book to be shallow and felt zero connection to any of the characters.
