Historia
It's time. We dive into the unbelievable history behind the quietest technology giant of them all — and as of recording the world's 9th (!) most valuable company — the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. This story checks every box in the Acquired pantheon of greatness: China, America, MIT, Don Valentine, Silicon Valley, "real men" looking silly, and... moats literally built by lasers. We're not kidding. Pull up a seat and settle in for a great one! Semiconductor chips, how they are made and why they are critically important to you!
Revisado: 05-28-24
Excellent content and incredible amount of research have produced a wonderful history of TSMC. Listening to this Acquired podcast will prepare you for the next ten years of semiconductor technological advances. Those semiconductor advances will permeate every corner of civilization from AI, robotics, cancer research, space, electrification of everything, to most creative aspects of civilization, such as books, video, music and other creative arts. TSMC is a company most people know nothing about, but it made the brains of the most complex machines which we all rely upon daily to survive in the modern world. Your phone, your computer, nearly every AI processor ever built are all products of TSMC. I was impressed with the quality of the research and the knowledge and industry expertise of the podcasters.

Historia
To understand the rise and fall of empires, we must follow the paths traveled by grain—along rivers, between ports, and across seas. In Oceans of Grain, historian Scott Reynolds Nelson reveals how the struggle to dominate these routes transformed the balance of world power. Following the US Civil War, tons of American wheat began to flood across the Atlantic, and food prices plummeted. This cheap foreign grain spurred the rise of Germany and Italy, the decline of the Habsburgs and the Ottomans, and the European scramble for empire.
