the best so far
Revisado: 10-04-14
I liked the first 2 books in the series, but the change of narrators this book alters the whole feel of the books and really gave me a better feel for Decius and now I LOVE the series, They are quick and addicting listens, allowing me to follow more of the adventures of what feels like a new friend in Decius. They allow us to understand the Rome of Decius and his family, how he, like all of us must deal with family politics and find our place in our family and world, takes the reader back to republican rome as it begins to see the future of imperial rome encroach.

Historia
John Maddox Roberts takes listeners back to a Rome filled with violence and evil. Vicious gangs ruled the streets of Crassus and Pompey, routinely preying on plebeian and patrician alike. So the garroting of a lowly ex-slave and the disembowelment of a foreign merchant in the dangerous Subura district seemed of little consequence to the Roman hierarchy.

keep going, gets better with every book
Revisado: 10-04-14
It took me quite a while through this book to really like it, I'm not sure if it is the author's way of telling it as a memoir or the reader - whom I LOVE, but reading this as an old man when the story is of a young man just distracted me, but eventually I liked it, but not loved it. I felt the same way about the next book as well, but changing to John Lee as narrator for the third book really changed the feel and I am now madly working my way through the entire series and really love it - almost as much as my beloved Macro and Cato.

Historia
A.D. 255. The Roman imperium is stretched to the breaking point, its authority and might challenged throughout the territories and along every border. One man is sent to marshal the defenses of a lonely city and to shore up the crumbling walls of a once indomitable symbol of Roman power, a man whose very name means war: a man called Ballista. So unfolds an epic drama - a story of empire, heroes, treachery, courage, and most of all, of brutal, bloody warfare.

narration failure
Revisado: 08-09-14
I really wanted to love this book, I read huge amounts of historical fiction, particularly roman and based on reviews was really looking foward to this book, but I just couldn't like it. The narration was the biggest problem, quite monotoned and for some reason a character had a marked scottish accent, but the story also dragged. The repetition of a command phrase over and over was also distracting. The story just never grabbed me like gordianus or macro and cato. I gave this more stars than I initially thought because finally in the last 2 hrs the story picked up.

Historia
This riveting debut set in 1534 England secured C. J. Sansom’s place “among the most distinguished of modern historical novelists” (P. D. James). When Henry VIII’s emissary is beheaded at an English monastery, hunchbacked lawyer Matthew Shardlake is dispatched to solve the crime. But as he uncovers a cesspool of sin, three more murders occur - and Matthew may be the next target.

a new favorite
Revisado: 08-02-12
A compelling read, a little slow to start, but builds steadily until it cannot be put down. I love this as a historical read, but the mysteries could stand alone, several intertwined mysteries of varying importance, but all grab you and beg to be solved. Keeps you guessing and takes you down many side roads to immerse the reader in the tudor time and court. This is the first of the series, Matthew Shardlake becomes more and more real and likeable book by book. Having finished the most recent book, I feel in some odd way like a friend has moved away. Cannot wait for the newest adventure. The narrator is amazing, could not be better.

surprised and disappointed
Revisado: 07-08-12
I love tudor period pieces and was expecting to love this after all the glowing reviews and was so disappointed to discover that I could barely get through it. The story was choppy and hard to follow, some of the voices were completely ridiculous - when did cardinal wolsey become a regency fop with a lisp? I know a great deal about this period, but still had almost no luck in following the flow of this story. The author did have an innovative and interesting idea in approaching the period from the viewpoint of Cromwell, but failed completely in telling a story that engages instead of confuses. Think very carefully before purchasing
