Historia
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Six Weeks of Blenheim Summer by Alastair Panton, read by Jonathan Keeble. As I write, I can clearly recall the stinging heat of a burning Blenheim, smells, tastes, expressions, sounds of voices and, most of all, fear gripping deep in me. Flying Officer Alastair Panton was just 23 when his squadron deployed across the Channel in the defence of France. They were desperate days. Pushed back to the beaches as the German blitzkrieg rolled through the Low Countries and into France, by June 4th 1940 the evacuation of the Allies from Dunkirk was complete. A little over two weeks later France surrendered.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the recollections of a British pilot in the early months of World War Two in France. It is performed beautifully

An epic of remarkable originality, Alone captures the heroism of World War II as movingly as any book in recent memory. Bringing to vivid life the world leaders, generals, and ordinary citizens who fought on both sides of the war, Michael Korda, the best-selling author of Clouds of Glory, chronicles the outbreak of hostilities, recalling as a prescient young boy the enveloping tension that defined pre-Blitz London, and then as a military historian the great events that would alter the course of the 20th century.

Michael Korda is an excellent writer who gives the reader a fresh take on Dunkirk. Although this story has been told many times by many people through the years, he gives a good account of the politics and people who lived through this very terrible period. It is an excellent narrative for anyone interested in WW2.

September 1939. For years now Britain has been rudderless, divided and grievously unequal. Successive governments have floundered as they struggled to cope with economic misery at home and machinations abroad. Many of the country's citizens are seduced by fascism; others are simply left alienated by leaders who seem unwilling or unable to take the decisive action that is so desperately needed.

This book deftly tells the stories of a number of British men who betrayed their country in World War 2, and who went to work for the Germans in a number of capacities. While I knew about some of the better-known among them such as the fascists Lord Haw Haw and John Amery (son of one of Winston Churchill's cabinet members), I did not know about others in this infamous group. It is a fascinating narrative, and I most highly recommend it.

Fantastically wonderful!!
Revisado: 03-24-17
Where to begin? The combination of Sherlock Holmes and Stephen Fry is quite simply outstanding. I spent many happy hours listening to the many adventures of Holmes and his faithful sidekick, Dr Watson. In my opinion, the powers that be could not have possibly picked anyone better than Mr Fry as he leads the reader from one story to the next. His voice is mesmerizing, and he gives these stories and their author justice.

Historia
1936 was a great year for the movie industry - the financial setbacks of the Great Depression were subsiding, so theater attendance was up. Americans everywhere were watching the stars, and few stars shined as brightly as one of America's most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astor's personal story wasn't a happy one. Born poor and widowed at 24, Mary Astor had spent years looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe.

This is a very well-written book about actress Mary Astor's front-page sensational legal battle with her physician husband in 1936. At the heart was the custody of their only child, and Astor's diary which her husband stole from her in the hope of using it against her. It is a fascinating tale of Hollywood royalty put on display in the courtroom and the papers as each parent fought frantically for custody. The performance is also quite excellent.

Betty Pack was charming, beautiful, and intelligent - and she knew it. As an agent for Britain's MI6 and then America's OSS during World War II, these qualities proved crucial to her success. This is the remarkable story of this "Mata Hari from Minnesota" ( Time) and the passions that ruled her tempestuous life - a life filled with dangerous liaisons and death-defying missions vital to the Allied victory.

This book tells the story of an American socialite who began to spy for the British before they even declared war on Germany in 1939. She was a complicated woman who did not hesitate to abandon both her children or to cheat on the British diplomat husband. At the same time, she used her beauty, charm and intelligence to help the British clandestinely in a cause she truly believed in, risking her life and willing to do anything to achieve her goal. Everything about this book is good. I had previously known about some of the wartime events referred to in this narrative but was surprised to learn that she had had a strong hand in helping the allies achieve success. I strongly recommend this book.

Historia
The Red Army had much to avenge when it finally reached the frontiers of the Third Reich in January 1945. Frenzied by their terrible experiences with Wehrmacht and SS brutality, they wreaked havoc - tanks crushing refugee columns, mass rape, pillage, and unimaginable destruction. Hundreds of thousands of women and children froze to death or were massacred; more than seven million fled westward from the fury of the Red Army. It was the most terrifying example of fire and sword ever known.

This is a very detailed account of the fall of Berlin and Nazi Germany in 1945. The book follows the allied invasion of the Fatherland, but the focus is on the Soviet army and its puppet master, Josef Stalin. The German army and population paid a very steep price for their nation's aggressive and utterly brutal invasions and the murders of millions. While the Soviet army was exacting revenge on the Germans, Stalin was busy purging his own people while the war was still very much in progress. It is a fascinating and thoroughly researched book that I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in WW2. The narration is quite first-rate as well.

The first book of D Day Through German Eyes has fascinated listeners around the world with its insight into the German experience of June 6, 1944. Now, book 2 contains a completely different set of astonishing German testimonies from the same archive. These newly translated eyewitness statements by German veterans show the defenders to be determined but psychologically insecure, often deluded in their thinking, and all too human in their shock at the onslaught they faced.

My father is a Normandy veteran, so hearing about the allied invasion from the German perspective was interesting. Several of the German veterans seemed shocked at the aggressiveness shown by the allies toward them, and I found this to be rather ironic. It is a fascinating book, nevertheless, and I do recommend it.

The Tudor monarchs were constantly surrounded by an army of attendants, courtiers and ministers. Even in their most private moments, they were accompanied by a servant specifically appointed for the task. A groom of the stool would stand patiently by as Henry VIII performed his daily purges, and when Elizabeth I retired for the evening, one of her female servants would sleep at the end of her bed. These attendants knew the truth behind the glamorous exterior.

This was a beautifully written and narrated book about the private lives of the Tudors. The writer chose to focus on their households ( servants, food, clothing, attendants, routines, etc), their day-to-day lives in the court and in their bed chambers. It is a fascinating study of this family, and I recommend it highly

Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

Other point of view
Revisado: 05-26-16
My father and a number of relatives fought in the Normandy campaign in the US Army and Army Air Force in 1944. Thus it was interesting to hear from the German point of view that they, the Wehrmacht, were fighting for Europe. The author, a German journalist during the war, interviewed five veterans who defended their respective areas ( known to the allies as Juno, Gold, Sword, Utah and Omaha beaches). Ten years had passed since the end of the war, so their memories were still very fresh, and their narrations are full of details. Their stories are fascinating to hear, and I recommend this book.
