I thought this was an essay on how to avoid female cliches when writing female characters. It is not. It is advice on how to control women, by determining which of these 21 cliches they are. Woman are not cliches, they are people. I wish I could remove it from my Library.

I'm not Asian American, but I have been a Christian for most of my life and a church goer from birth. I've seen many of the underlying problems that exist in the modern American Church; the problems most churches won't talk about. It's refreshing to hear so many different perspectives discussing these issues, not to ridicule, but to confront them and work towards real solutions. Any Christian (and non Christian) can read this book and find something that resonates with them concerning who we are and how we relate to others in Christ's Church.

Interdimensional beings, a government conspiracy, clever comedy, and a cast of British characters...and one American. It's like if Joss Whedon had written Torchwood.

This is one of the few book series that can aggressively get my attention and keep it. It is also a fine example of the quality that returns to storytelling when the author is free to tell the story the way they want. Bancroft has a talent for combining both traditional story structure and modern character development in a way that feels like a refreshing punch in the face. The Babel series pulls you in before the first chapter and assaults you with the hard and awful truth about humanity, the cruelty we are capable of, and the soul-crushing societies that it builds. While the story holds up a heavy mirror to the human race, it also does an excellent job of reminding the reader that while someone can do terrible things, they might also be someone who got lost in the madness of trying to survive, and they just might be someone in need of forgiveness and a hand up. The only reason not to read Senlin Ascends is if you're like most of the inhabitants of the Tower of Babel who are too busy trying to make it to the next level on the back of someone else and don't like having their conscience pricked.

A Modern take on a Classic Style.

Out of respect for the author I don't want to assume that the classic pulp-style adventure story was the source of their inspiration, but you get a lot of that which is great. The characters are wonderfully flawed, cynical, and hilariously human and if you can't deal with the fact that human beings swear then I would skip this book cause it's a fine example of an author making use of the more crass parts of a person's vocabulary. Treasure hunting, secret societies, and the dark knowledge of our primordial past mixed with today's world of social media, internet celebrities, and all the other nonsense that the human race thinks is so important. Is it a story that's been told before? Yes, stories are like that, and good stories like this one do it well.

British Sci-Fi comedy meets ultra Glam-Rock!

It's as if Douglas Adams and the cast of Red Dwarf threw a concert on the Tardis! If you are a fan of any of these staples of British Sci-Fi, Space Opera is far from just a re-imagining of these classics. The author draws on everything that makes British Sci-Fi so good even us Americans love it: The Vastness of the Universe, The Meaning of Existence, and the Ridiculousness of the Human Race. Then the author adds a has-been glam rock band of the near future forced to save the human race in an intergalactic battle of the bands! Which reminds me; Rick and Morty fans are invited to this party!

Finally, a narrator with grit and gravel that puts it to good use. This guy needs to be reading the Conan stories.

Pulp readers, Guilty pleasure seekers, and Brown coats in despair. Come with us to the Black Ocean. The only way I'm not going to recommend this book series is if you're too up tight about what you read. Written as a "Successor" to the Firefly/Serenity series, Galaxy Outlaws accomplishes what it sets out to do early and to be honest, if that's all the series did it would have gotten old really quick. The author gives you a cast of wonderfully damaged characters complete with gun play, endless sarcasm, a talking dog, and a wizard named Mort. If you miss cheering for Big Damn Heroes, If you love stories with a clever blending of sci-fi and fantasy, and if you just want to escape the 21st century for a while then Tales of the Black Ocean is for you.
