Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

a "first love of books" story.
Revisado: 04-20-24
A way of escape, comfort and the building of courage . Grace finds her way thru life, love and the war though the stories of others, their trials and triumphs. Beautifully narrated . Ive never wanted to go visit a kcal bookshop more than as I read about the characters within the last bookshop in London.

Historia
Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

be sure your sins will find you out.
Revisado: 04-12-24
This intricate web of lies insnares every character- all while each one weaves a story in which they're the lead actor. Just when you think the entanglements can't become any more constricted- along comes another spider from the past.

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Reading this as I'm planning our wedding?? Hmmmm..
Revisado: 02-23-21
I was unfamiliar with Foley's writing style- so it took abit to get involved with the plot. But to her credit- Lucy Foley really gets you so much more involved and connected with the individual characters right from the get go. Since you dont even know who the victim was- as in most mysteries- the back story on all the individual guests at the wedding has an cloak of intrigue I typically reserve for only 1 or 2 "main" characters. The venue or landscape itself becomes a character early along the way- unyielding and uncaring as to the will or carefully laid plans of any member of the party. I absolutely love it when I think I've got something figured out- only to find I have been ever so slightly off in my calculations. I was close to be sure! Its rare not to feel cheated out of some detail or nugget of info that could have made sense of it all earlier on- but in this case- the words silenced by fear or even whispered in moments of anguish- were as crucial as those screams in the night,, for the entire guest list. I hope the members of our book club enjoyed it as much as I did. I know several who are hoping for the movie! Myself included. Can wait to read another of Lucy Foley's works.
