Historia
In 1927, South Africa passes the Immorality Act, prohibiting sexual intercourse between “Europeans” (white people) and “natives” (Black people). Those who break the draconian new law face imprisonment—for men of up to five years; for women, four years. Abram and his wife Alisa have their share of marital problems, but they also have a comfortable life in South Africa with their two young girls. But then the Act is passed. Alisa is black, and their two children are now evidence of their involvement in a union that has been criminalized by the state.

Klyph, Klyph, Klyph!!
Revisado: 11-28-21
Wonderful information contained in the book, but since this is an audiobook, the narration is important. Lots of authors should not narrate, and Kliph Nesteroff is one of them. He has so many buddies in comedy - why not let one of them do it? Marc Maron would have done a great job! He’s from BC, so referring to Spryo Agnew and whatever the heck he called Estes Kefauver might be understandable. But lots of common words and show biz names are also mispronounced. And the horrible impressions. All were very distracting and take away from the enjoyment of such a well researched book. I would suggest reading this book rather than listening! Not worth the constant cringing.

Bart Simpson Narrates
Revisado: 05-25-17
I love Scandanavian mysteries, so I was very disappointed I could not get past the narration to enjoy this one. I checked later books in the series, and they are narrated by the same person. Very disappointed, but when I want to hear Bart and Lisa, I'll watch them on tv.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Historia
"It was a beautiful, breezy, yellow-and-green afternoon..." This is how Abby Whitshank always begins the story of how she fell in love with Red that day in July 1959. The Whitshanks are one of those families that radiate togetherness: an indefinable, enviable kind of specialness. But they are also like all families, in that the stories they tell themselves reveal only part of the picture.

I have to be careful not to gobble up Anne Tyler's books - I have learned to savor them. As always with AT, the book left me wanting more - particularly more of Linnie Mae and Junior.
