Historia
On July 10, 1943, the largest amphibious invasion ever mounted took place, larger even than the Normandy invasion 11 months later: 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops came ashore or were parachuted onto Sicily, signaling the start of the campaign to defeat Nazi Germany on European soil. Operation HUSKY, as it was known, was enormously complex, involving dramatic battles on land, in the air, and at sea. Yet, despite its paramount importance to ultimate Allied victory, and its drama, very little has been written about the 38-day Battle for Sicily.

The thoroughness of this book really impressed me.
Revisado: 04-01-25
I was very impressed with the reader’s ability to pronounce all those Italian names. Very interesting book. Very, very thorough. I like how he finished it up and told how the people that were in the book who survived what they went on to do in life.

Historia
Recruited by the US Army and Navy from small towns and elite colleges, more than 10,000 women served as codebreakers during World War II. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, these women moved to Washington and learned the meticulous work of codebreaking. Their efforts shortened the war, saved countless lives, and gave them access to careers previously denied to them.

Having served in the Army Signal Corps during the Vietnam War,, I found this book enormously interesting. But the BS the women had to go through was awful! I guess it was the times, but I sure am glad it’s not that way nowadays.

Historia
From the best-selling author of The Lightouse Stevensons, a gripping history of the drama and danger of wrecking since the 18th century - and the often grisly ingenuity of British wreckers, scavengers of the sea. A fine wreck has always represented sport, pleasure, treasure and, in many cases, the difference between living well and just getting by. The Cornish were supposed to be so ferocious that notices of shipwrecks were given out during morning service by the minister....

I ordered this book by accident, but once I opened it up, I became completely fascinated.
I swear there were times when I would get in my truck and drive around just so I could listen to it.
The author did amagnificent job reading, if you’re interested in British sea stories and the like, this book is for you!

Historia
The last installment of the War in the Far East trilogy, Asian Armageddon 1944-1945, continues and completes the narrative of the first two volumes, describing how a US-led coalition of nations battled Japan into submission through a series of cataclysmic encounters. Leyte Gulf, the biggest naval battle ever, was testimony to the paramount importance of controlling the ocean, as was the fact that the US Navy carried out the only successful submarine campaign in history, reducing Japan's military and merchant navies to shadows of the former selves.

Methodical yet interesting
Revisado: 05-18-24
While , I didn’t really learn a lot of new things from this book, the reader did an impressive job of performing it.
Japanese names were impeccably pronounced. Lots of insights from civilians, soldiers, sailors, the Emperor of Japan and American military brass, along with the common sailor, marine and soldier.
A very well done book.

Historia
A magnificent history of the opening years of the Civil War by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Bruce Catton. The first book in Bruce Catton's Pulitzer Prize-winning Army of the Potomac Trilogy, Mr. Lincoln's Army is a riveting history of the early years of the Civil War, when a fledgling Union Army took its stumbling first steps under the command of the controversial general George McClellan.

Antietam understood finally!
Revisado: 04-23-24
One thing about a Bruce Catton book is that it’s going to be replete with many details. This book was likewise.
One thing I learned was that the North could’ve won the war at Antietam had they just made one more charge.
So no matter how many battle flags were won, or how many times the buglers tried to rally the boys in blue it was all for naught.
I never understood the relationship between the Army of the Potomac and General McClellan; after listening to this book, I finally get it.
Now that I live on the East Coast, this summer, I’m going drive up to that cornfield and listen for the bugles and smell the smoke that has since blown away.

Historia
The epic, never-before-told story of Columbus's final, and perhaps greatest, journey to the New World. The final voyage of Christopher Columbus was by far his most dangerous, unexpected, exhilarating, and consequential. It was, as Pulitzer Prize-winner Samuel Eliot Morison put it, "a story of adventure which imagination could hardly invent; a struggle between man and the elements, in which the most splendid manifestations of devotion, loyalty and courage are mingled with the vilest human passions."

Historia
John C. McManus, one of our most highly acclaimed historians of World War II, takes listeners from Pearl Harbor - a rude awakening for a military woefully unprepared for war - to Makin, a sliver of coral reef where the Army was tested against the increasingly desperate Japanese. In between were nearly two years of punishing combat as the Army transformed, at times unsteadily, from an undertrained garrison force into an unstoppable juggernaut, and America evolved from an inward-looking nation into a global superpower.

Brilliant book on the War in the Pacific
Revisado: 08-26-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book on the war in the Pacific. Although I am quite knowledgeable about the war itself, this author really dove into it thoroughly and gave you the perspective of what happened during the war from soldiers and sailors and nurses on ratings. Having known a man who spent some time at Cabanatuan During the war, this book gave me an opportunity to understand more thoroughly what he went through. He does a very thorough examination of Douglas MacArthur, whom I always knew to be a vainglorious, self-righteous, narcissistic commander, the author goes into great detail about how spurious his command really was. That’s not to say that he wasn’t brilliant, he was just a diva in uniform just like another brilliant General George S Patton. I really like this book.

Historia
The D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, launched on June 6, 1944, is widely referred to as the longest day of World War Two. Historian Victor Brooks argues that 1944 was, in effect, the longest year for Americans of that era both in terms of United States casualties and in deciding the outcome of war itself.

From the very outset I found this book fascinating even though I too have written extensively on World War II. The ease at which the reader presents Brooks’ work was quite enjoyable.
I heartily recommend this book to any serious WWII buff.

Historia
By June 1941, Germany's war machine looked to be unstoppable. The Nazi blitzkrieg had taken Poland, France, and Holland with shocking speed. The Luftwaffe had bombed London, while German U-boats wrought havoc on Allied shipping on the Atlantic. And yet, as James Holland shows at the start of The Allies Strike Back, 1941-1943 - the second volume in his magisterial narrative of World War II in the West - cracks were already appearing in Germany's apparent invincibility.
