Okay, so it’s a kid’s story. But, as an adult, I fully enjoyed it. It would be a great story for a car trip with kids!

These stories are all a part of the Cainesville tales: some are better than others. I particularly liked the young Gabriel tales.
What I did not like were some of the readers: I found the 2 who read the last tale, the Ricky & Olivia tale particularly grating. These are not the readers who read the novels, but I’m not sure that’s the problem. At any rate, I found it distracting enough that I had a hard time focusing on the story. I might just end up re-reading it on Kindle.

I have listened to 5 books in this series in a row, and the narrator gets more annoying with each book. First: the word is “cavalry”, not “Calvary”. There’s a difference. Merit uses the word a lot, and the narrator bungles it every time. “Darius” is pronounced “Dair-ee-us” not “Dar-Eye-us”. Imagine listening to that for an entire book. In addition to that, sometimes it’s just the wrong word. “Merit & Jonah stared a glance”. I’m thinking they shared it. It makes more sense. Instead of a waitress “shrugging” and filling water glasses, she was “struggling”. There are more instances of this, but you get the idea. Each time it happens, it pulls me completely out of the story while I try to make sense out of what was said and what should have been said.
That being said, I am enjoying the series. And I’m very happy a new narrator is taking over with the next book! (Which is the first time ever I’ve been happy about a new narrator)

The second narrator for the 4th book has changed. It’s jarring (especially as I decided to listen to the 1st three books again before finishing the series) and I don’t think she’s very good with the male voices. This will not keep me from purchasing the 5th book; it’s just disappointing.
Carine Montbertrand still very good, does great with the chapters from Olivia’s point of view (including the male voices)

It was okay. Happy I got it on sale, and will not bother to listen to any other Larry Correa/John Ringo collaborations. The main character was mostly unlikeable. Arrogant, genius, annoying..: at several points, I really wanted a werewolf to eat him. I enjoyed some of it, was aggravated by much of it.

So yes, I really enjoyed it. Love, friendship, quirky characters and a satisfying ending that left me with a smile on my face and a desire to find more of Carolyn Brown's books.

I loved this book! The whole book is narrated by Bowser, the dog - which works much better than you would think, thanks to the skill of the reader. Plus, even though it's a mystery starring an 11 year girl and her dog, I (an adult) found it very entertaining and plan on getting the next in the series.

I first read this book in sixth grade & loved it and read the whole series. I plan to dig out the rest of the series and read it again. I will NOT listen to the rest of the books. I've actually heard Dick Hill narrate other books well, but this, I think is a reissue of an old recording. He breathes, he sighs, he swallows, and his interpretation of a derisive laugh set my teeth on edge. He is overly loud and shrill and really just does not work for a book where one of the primary characters is female. Even the hero of the story sometimes sounded shrill!

Love the stories. And the narrator is very good, keeping voices of myriad characters distinct and believable. What he does not do, however, is pause between changes of scene - this is the third book in this series by him, and I find myself frequently hitting the backward skip button because of this mannerism.
