Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

I liked it much more than the handmaid’s tale
Revisado: 12-09-24
Less crass and I enjoyed the many threads coming together in this more complex storyline

Historia
Come inside a jury room as one juror leads a starkly divided room to consensus. Join a young CIA officer as he recruits a reluctant foreign agent. And sit with an accomplished surgeon as he tries, and fails, to convince yet another cancer patient to opt for the less risky course of treatment. In Supercommunicators, Charles Duhigg blends deep research and his trademark storytelling skills to show how we can all learn to identify and leverage the hidden layers that lurk beneath every conversation.

The information was easy to connect with, and easy to imagine, using in day-to-day interactions. This would’ve been really helpful for me as a highschooler.

"Whether by design or by chance," Terryl and Fiona Givens write, "we find ourselves in a universe filled with mystery. We encounter appealing arguments for a Divinity that is a childish projection, for prophets as scheming or deluded imposters, and for scripture as so much fabulous fiction. But there is also compelling evidence that a glorious Divinity presides over the cosmos, that His angels are strangers we have entertained unawares, and that His word and will are made manifest through a sacred canon that is never definitively closed."

One of the few books that I have reread many times
Revisado: 11-05-23
This is one of my go-to’s when I have to work on Sundays. It highlights and underlines the truly good news of the restored gospel that we sometimes lose sight of as we “anxiously engage” or when we get discouraged and overwhelmed.
God loves you and wants you back with Him and the plan of happiness is designed to accomplish just that. God isn’t surprised by our failures or addictions- take hope!

Historia
Eugene England (1933–2001) — one of the most influential and controversial intellectuals in modern Mormonism — lived in the crossfire between religious tradition and reform. This first serious biography, by leading historian Terryl L. Givens, shimmers with the personal tensions felt deeply by England during the turmoil of the late 20th century.

Made me consider flat spots in my own faith and development. Grateful for the push to question and explore the gospel in our process of learning and growing. Never heard of Eugene England before but I admire him.
This read introduced me to Levi Peterson- the Backslider was different than anything from deseret book but brought interesting aspects of personal growth into focus.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn famously said that one of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming totalitarianism can't happen in their country. Many American Christians are making that mistake today, sleepwalking through the erosion of our freedoms. Live Not by Lies will wake them and equip them for the long resistance.

It was helpful for me to understand the history of this type of change in society, and how other people successfully navigated.
I will definitely be listening to this one again and inviting my wife and kids to listen along with me.

Historia
The worst idea in history is back! Communism has wrecked national economies, enslaved whole peoples, and killed more than a hundred million men and women. What's not to like? Too many young Americans are supporting communism. Millennials prefer socialism to capitalism, and 25 percent have a positive view of Lenin. One in four Americans believe that George W. Bush killed more people than Joseph Stalin. And 69 percent of millennials would vote for a socialist for president. They ought to know better.

So wild, it seemed off base but it checks out
Revisado: 04-29-21
The voice is too “bro” or military style but once I got past that, I learned a ton. Lots that I didn’t really want to believe. Every time it was too far out there and didn’t seem real, I researched and it always ended up being solid.
Still don’t really get why communism has enduring popularity? Yeah the commies have been pretty impressive with their cultural campaigning but it seems like a self evidently horrible idea. Cmon!

Historia
In Wealth, Poverty, and Politics, Thomas Sowell, one of the foremost conservative public intellectuals in the country, argues that political and ideological struggles have led to dangerous confusion about income inequality in America. Pundits and politically motivated economists trumpet ambiguous statistics and sensational theories while ignoring the true determinant of income inequality: the production of wealth.

Well written and enlightening. Well worth the time. I had felt that some of the current arguments in the media were a little off but couldn’t spell it out. This closed the gap for me.
