Amusing and Entertaining
Revisado: 09-23-23
Although this is a lighthearted story, it does inspire some reflection on the trouble that can be caused by false expectations. The narration was good. Even the American character’s accent was spot on.

When a home aide arrives to assist a rambunctious family at a crossroads, simmering tensions boil over in this “witty, exuberant debut” (People) that is an “absolute delight from start to finish” (Sarah Haywood, New York Times best-selling author) perfect for fans of Where’d You Go, Bernadette and Evvie Drake Starts Over.

I enjoyed the story very much. The narrator was also good except for the American Southern accent, but those parts were brief

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Thank you, Kristan!
Revisado: 07-30-21
Kristan Higgins books have always been fun and entertaining, and this is no exception, but her writing seems to be growing in depth and maturity. I lost my husband five years ago, and I found the story of Lauren's death and Josh's journey to make it through the first year after the death of his beloved wife to be so evocative of some of my own experiences. Reading it was a healing experience.

Listening to The Old Ducks’ Club, by Maddie Please, I felt as though I had gone on a carefree vacation to a Greek Isle, had an unexpectedly wonderful time with daring new friends, savored new flavors, had a chance to take stock of my life, and decide on some new directions to explore. I can’t wait for the next adventure!

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

New territory - same brilliant wit
Revisado: 02-10-18
Kristan Higgin's novels have seen me through some tough times. This book dwelved more seriously into some very human shortcomings than some of Higgin's other works, but did so without sacrificing her trademark humor. I could have done without the slapstick bits with the bird and deer, though.

Historia
Lacey Terwilliger's shock and humiliation over her husband's philandering prompt her to add some bonus material to Mike's company newsletter: stunning Technicolor descriptions of the special brand of "administrative support" his receptionist gives him. The detailed mass e-mail to Mike's family, friends, and clients blows up in her face, and before one can say "instant urban legend", Lacey has become the pariah of her small Kentucky town and a media punch line....

If you enjoy quirky characters and delightful banter, this is the book for you. And one more thing: I like that the characters are Southern, but not cartoonish, stereotypical Southerners. The narrator is talented and sounds truly genuine.

Historia
Dune Road is the story of life in an exclusive beach town after the tourists have left for the summer and the eccentric (and moneyed) community sticks around. Our heroine is a single mom who works for a famous - and famously reclusive - novelist. When she stumbles on a secret that the great man has kept hidden for years, she knows that there are plenty of women in town who would love to get their hands on it - including some who fancy the writer for themselves.

This was a satisfying story of compassion versus evil. However, in order to enjoy it, you have to be able to overlook the fact that the narrator makes all the male characters - even the good guys – sound highly suspect.

Four years later, she's hit the jackpot when she gets The Call: the sitcom she wrote, The Next Big Thing, has gotten the green light, and Ruthie's going to be the show-runner. Funny Story!
Revisado: 07-18-12
Jennifer Weiner has a great sense of humor and it's as good as ever in The Next Best Thing. One reviewer mentioned that there was a lot of whining. Maybe so, but it's funny whining. Although it's a lighthearted story, it puts the Hollywood culture of shallow beauty into perspective, while emphasizing the importance of inner resources and heart. Some of the obstacles Ruthie (the main character) had to surmount became a bit tedious in places, but I found myself rooting for her and had a hard time putting the book down.
