Historia
In 1558 the ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn apart by religious conflict. As power in England shifts precariously between Catholics and Protestants, high principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty, and love. Ned Willard wants nothing more than to marry Margery Fitzgerald. But when the lovers find themselves on opposing sides of the religious divide sweeping across the country, Ned goes to work for Princess Elizabeth. When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England.

Some parts are a bit predictable but overall the story is amazing. A terrific read that engaged me for hours and helped me understand that era much better. I knew religion was very important then but I didn’t realize how bitter the divide was between Catholics and Protestants.

Historia
On March 29, 1975, sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyons, ages 10 and 12, vanished from a shopping mall in suburban Washington, DC. As shock spread, then grief, a massive police effort found nothing. The investigation was shelved, and the mystery endured. Then, in 2013, a cold case squad detective found something he and a generation of detectives had missed. It pointed them toward a man named Lloyd Welch, then serving time for child molestation in Delaware.

Historia
While the world watched Donald Trump’s presidency in horror or delight, few noticed that his lifelong grifting quietly continued. Less than 40 minutes after taking the oath of office, Trump began turning the White House into a money machine for himself, his family, and his courtiers. The Big Cheat offers a guided tour of how money flowed in and out of Trump’s hundreds of enterprises, showing in simple terms how a corrupt president used our government for his benefit, even putting national security at risk.

Stupendous Corruption
Revisado: 07-07-23
Unreal. It’s amazing that Trump got away with the acts described in this book. Trump, empowered by cowards and completely without any conscience, did what he wanted when he wanted to do it. This book should make anyone who cares about democracy angry.

Historia
Dre Ross has one more shot. Despite being a successful political consultant, his aggressive tactics have put him on thin ice with his boss, Mrs. Fitz, who plucked him from juvenile incarceration and mentored his career. She exiles him to the backwoods of South Carolina with $250,000 of dark money to introduce a ballot initiative on behalf of a mining company. The goal: to manipulate the locals into voting to sell their pristine public land to the highest bidder.

Historia
Throughout Guatemala’s thirty-six-year armed conflict, state forces killed more than two hundred thousand people. Argentina’s military dictatorship disappeared up to thirty thousand people. In the wake of genocidal violence, families of the missing searched for the truth. Young scientists joined their fight against impunity. Gathering evidence in the face of intimidation and death threats, they pioneered the field of forensic exhumation for human rights.

Disturbing and Hard to Listen To
Revisado: 06-09-23
But people who care about other people should consider this book as an important book to listen to. Particularly disturbing is the story of Argentina’s violence in the 70’s and it’s roots in ideology. It chills me to the core due to the complicity of the Catholic Church in Argentina and the horrifying parallels between the right wing in Argentina in the 70’s and the American right wing today. If you don’t think government sponsored mass murder can’t happen here, listen and think carefully. Guatemala was horrifying too, but in my opinion less about ideology and more about greed and power, aided and abetted by the American political establishment to protect a few American companies.

Historia
Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

America is in upheaval, battered by violent weather and extreme politics. In California in 2013, Tony Pietrus, a scientist studying deposits of undersea methane, receives a death threat.

Ok, but long winded and to many characters
Revisado: 05-04-23
I listened to half of it but it just grating on me. Too many characters doing too little for the story to advance. It drags in places. The story is important and relevant but it would really snap and pop if some serious cutting happened.

Historia
Since the turn of the century, a generation has come of age knowing only war, recession, political gridlock, racial hostility, and a simmering fear of environmental calamity. In the country’s forgotten pockets, where industry long ago fled, where foreclosures, Walmarts, and opiates riddle the land, death rates for rural whites have skyrocketed, fueled by suicide, addiction, and a rampant sense of marginalization and disillusionment. This is the world the characters in Stephen Markley’s brilliant debut novel, Ohio, inherit. This is New Canaan.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

David Cay Johnston has made a name for himself as the defender of the common man, calling out the rich and powerful for cheating the system at the expense of everyone else. Whether he's exposing unjust loopholes in the tax code that help the rich get richer or pointing out how powerful corporations pocket government subsidies at excessive taxpayer expense, Johnston is an eloquent town crier for justice and equality.

The Infuriating Reasons We The People Get Screwed At Every Turn
Revisado: 12-21-22
Could be the subtitle for this book. We have to stop watching the Kardashian’s prance around and start paying attention to the politicians. It occurred to me when I listened to this book that when a politician says “government should be run like a business’” he is really saying it should be run like the business he plans to work for after he is done extracting the last bit of personal benefit from working for the government.
