Historia
Inez Victor knows that the major casualty of the political life is memory. But the people around Inez have made careers out of losing track. Her senator husband wants to forget the failure of his last bid for the presidency. Her husband's handler would like the press to forget that Inez's father is a murderer. And, in 1975, the year in which much of this bitterly funny novel is set, America is doing its best to lose track of its one-time client, the lethally hemorrhaging republic of South Vietnam.

Perfect and odd
Revisado: 01-03-24
This is an odd book that is so exactly my thing! It is a story about a family and a murder but more importantly about a relationship between a politician’s wife and a government fixer. Or maybe it’s about Vietnam. It’s not a whodunnit or whydunnit but the questions are asked. It’s about Hawaii and more.

Historia
When CIA officer Craig Norton glimpses an unexplainable object in the sky over Mongolia, he can’t quite believe it. Frankly, he isn’t sure Langley will either. Despite his misgivings, Craig reports the sighting in a cable to headquarters detailing the incident. Fast-forward fifteen years. Craig is still reeling from the report that tanked his career and his personal life. That fleeting moment on the Mongolian steppe made him a pariah at the Agency, and he still hasn’t recovered. At this point, he doubts he ever will.

Historia
The wife has it all. A big house in a nice neighborhood, a ride-or-die snarky best friend, Temi, with whom to laugh about facile men, and a devoted husband who loves her above all else—even his distaste for Temi. On a seemingly normal day, Temi comes over to spend a lazy afternoon with the wife: drinking wine, eating snacks, and laughing caustically about the husband's shortcomings. But when the husband comes home and a series of confessions are made, the wife's two confidants are suddenly forced to jockey for their positions, throwing everyone's integrity into question.

YES PERFECT EXCELLENT
I wanted more but the story ends in the perfect place. These friends. This couple. This terrible marriage. It’s all so good. I loved the structure. How each pov section forwards the story without retreading what you’ve just found out. It was real and vicious and perfect.

Historia
Jen Hansen, Kittie Spears, and Cynthia Nichols have been friends since childhood. They are now approaching 40 and their lives have changed, but their insular East Texas town has not. They stay sane by drinking wine in the afternoons, dishing about other women in the neighborhood, and bonding over the heartache of their own encroaching middle age and raising ungrateful teens.

When the neighbor is HOT...(slightly spoilery)
Revisado: 12-13-22
Listen to this for the mystery but stay for the friends. May Cobb wrote these women so vividly! I laughed and shook my head at them. They are not bad people but life has put them in particular boxes and when things don't go their way they go to extremes. The drama is dialed up past 11 with them and their friendship, all of them stirred up by a man who is a temptation for one wife, attractive but suspicious to another wife and a golden boy who puts stars in the eyes of one divorcee. MY SUMMER DARLINGS is worth your time. Pop the cork on a good wine and get comfortable with this book.

With a new game, Mass Effect Andromeda, set for release in 2017, the launch of a new series of Mass Effect novels is timely. The new game will take the story in a dramatic new direction and is set in a new region of space, with a new and deadly enemy.

Historia
All of a sudden the streets of your city are so overpopulated with security cameras and closed-circuit TV that you have to lock yourself in the bathroom to have an undocumented moment. And locks, which used to provide the recreational pleasure of a moderately challenging crossword puzzle, have become genuinely pickproof.

Bernie forever
Revisado: 10-21-22
Bernie Rhodenbarr is back and he’s got an itch to steal a diamond. Block brings back old favorites in this one and I’m so glad to see them. It feels a little bittersweet to hear Richard Ferrone giving life to Bernie now that he himself has died but there’s no one else I would’ve wanted to hear more.
Overall it’s different from what you might expect a Burglar tale to be but it worked for me.

Melissa Bank's runaway best seller, The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing, charmed readers and critics alike with its wickedly insightful, tender look at a young woman's forays into love, work, and friendship. Now, with The Wonder Spot, Bank is back with her signature combination of devilishly self-deprecating humor, seriousness, and wisdom.

Historia
Shirley Jackson is one of the most important American authors of the last hundred years and among our greatest chroniclers of the female experience. This extraordinary compilation of personal correspondence has all the hallmarks of Jackson’s beloved fiction: flashes of the uncanny in the domestic, sparks of horror in the quotidian, and the veins of humor that run through good times and bad.

Perhaps there will be a book with more letters from both sides of the conversation or her letters will be printed in their entirety but this book (and its narrator) brought her wit and charm and strength into my life and I am forever changed.

Murder mystery with a side of magic
Revisado: 06-06-19
This isn't my first Gailey book (see all the Hippo books!!!) so believe me when I say Magic for Liars is better. MfL is a book about family and grief and desire. Desire for what we want versus what we actually need. Did I know whodunit before the end? I had an inkling but, like the main character Ivy, I was too caught up in the world of a magic school and maybe, just maybe, a new love, to stop to consider the clues. This book has a lovely beating heart and it surprised me and by the end, broke my heart.

Roxane Weary might just be my favorite PI now. This second book of Lepionka’s is excellent. Without Sue Grafton there will never be another Kinsey Milhone book but at least we have Roxane.
