Historia
Kelefa Sanneh, one of the essential voices of our time on music and culture, has made a deep study of how popular music unites and divides us, charting the way genres become communities. In Major Labels, Sanneh distills a career’s worth of knowledge about music and musicians into a brilliant and omnivorous reckoning with popular music - as an art form (actually, a bunch of art forms), as a cultural and economic force, and as a tool that we use to build our identities.

If you love music...
Revisado: 03-15-23
...If you love history. If you love music history. If you love the idea of history examined through a musical lens. If you love music discussed through the lens of culture. Not to mention, if you love Prince, Stevie, The Police and your a Hip Hop head...YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY (QUEST)LOVE THIS AUDIOBOOK. His approach is astoundingly smart with a truly enigmatic and refreshingly personal execution, to boot. The man knows his ish! And he is really fun to listen too. So glad he decided to narrate it himself. Download this jawn right away! (shout out to South Philly, in the house y'all)

Brilliant from start to finish!
Revisado: 01-26-23
Besides being one of the greatest working artist alive (let alone musician/songwriter), David Byrnes curiosity and exploration is thorough and thoughtful. This, to me, is a MUST read/listen for anyone interested or simply instinctively drawn to making things.

Historia
He wasn’t known to mainstream audiences, even though he worked with renowned acts like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu and influenced the music of superstars like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. He died at the age of 32, and in his lifetime he never had a pop hit. Yet since his death, J Dilla has become a demigod: revered by jazz musicians and rap icons from Robert Glasper to Kendrick Lamar; memorialized in symphonies and taught at universities.

A great memoir about the greatest most influential music producer there ever was. Gorgeously read with lots of love, care and consideration from the author. Enjoyed the audio production in the background of the narration. A truly great read both on and off the page

Historia
In Jason Mott’s Hell of a Book, a Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel. That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and more urgent: Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour.

Historia
Forged in the fires of the Bronx and Kingston, Jamaica, hip-hop became the Esperanto of youth rebellion and a generation-defining movement. In a post-civil rights era defined by deindustrialization and globalization, hip-hop crystallized a multiracial, polycultural generation's worldview and transformed American politics and culture. But that epic story has never been told with this kind of breadth, insight, and style.

Pretty good rendering of an incredible book!
Revisado: 11-17-21
Most definitely worth reading the actual book which is incredible. But they did a more than decent job with the audio version (with the exception of a few mispronounced names/places/titles) - it's Jeru the DAM-aja, not dah-MAH-jah 😆.

Historia
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

Outstanding! Heart and gut wrenching, but truly outstanding. Fine and fair reporting. Plaintive and insightful delivery in the writing and performance. Not for the faint of heart but all the more reason to dive in. If you care or are in the least concerned about the human condition, from any walk of life, you'll find this audio book illuminating.

Historia
The seminal rap group A Tribe Called Quest brought jazz into the genre, resurrecting timeless rhythms to create masterpieces. This narrative follows Tribe from their early days as part of the Afrocentric rap collective known as the Native Tongues, through their first three classic albums, to their eventual breakup and long hiatus. Throughout the narrative, poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib connects the music and cultural history to their street-level impact and draws from his own experience to reflect on how its distinctive sound resonated among fans like himself.

Great book!!! 'Meh' on the narration (sadly)
Revisado: 03-05-19
Incredible and beautiful recounting of a love for hip hop and for the phenomenal rap group that is A Tribe Called Quest. The narration (almost) killed it though. And not 'killed' in a good way. Next time hire someone who knows how to pronounce Eric B and RAH-kim and The Fugees correctly. Just being black doesn't qualify you to narrate a book on great hip hop.
