Historia
An extraordinary literary work, Dear Mr. You renders the singular arc of a woman's life through letters Mary-Louise Parker composes to the men, real and hypothetical, who have informed the person she is today. Beginning with the grandfather she never knew, the letters range from a missive to the beloved priest from her childhood to remembrances of former lovers to an homage to a firefighter she encountered to a heartfelt communication with the uncle of the infant daughter she adopted.

Wow, what a poet! Mary Louise Parker's reflections are mesmerizing, beautifully written, and read with her extraordinary acting gift. The final chapter about her father was worth the book's price alone.

Engaging narrative!
Revisado: 10-25-22
The author is a gifted story-teller, giving the reader lovely descriptions of the protagonist's travels and travails. Although decidedly "G-rated," the plot is not without romance, fear, greed, lust, and pathos. A fun read!

Historia
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

Captivating
Revisado: 07-18-22
I have all of David Sedaris' books...this is among his best. Laugh-out-loud bits are interspersed with surprisingly personal takes on his family history. I'm thinking he waited until after his father's death to share the tales of that parent's prurient weirdness.

Introducing his autobiography, A Life in Parts, Bryan Cranston talks to us about embodying the infamous drug kingpin Walter White, the physical and emotional turmoil that comes with being an actor and how a difficult and oftentimes violent upbringing led him to become an unrelenting optimist. Having first graced our screens at the age of seven, Bryan now has over 150 titles to his name, including Linwood Boomer’s hugely celebrated sitcom Malcom in the Middle and Vince Gilligan’s multiaward-winning Breaking Bad.

Historia
Stanley Tucci grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the kitchen table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the savory recipes and into the compelling stories behind them. Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about his growing up in Westchester, New York.

Stanley has TASTE!
Revisado: 07-13-22
Some books just don't work as well being heard vs. read in print, and unfortunately, this is one. I adore Stanley Tucci as an actor, so I assumed I would appreciate hearing him narrate his book, and, for the most part, he delivered. PROS: Loved vicariously traveling & eating in all the places he's lived, worked, and visited, especially around Italy. SPOILER ALERT: Stanley waits until nearly the book's end to uncover the double meaning of its title: his cancer might've robbed him of his taste (as well as his livelihood!). Descriptions of his cancer discovery and treatment were compelling. CONS: It was quite irritating to hear mouth-watering food descriptions and recipes, without PDFs of the recipes (perhaps Audible's fault?). Also, the book included dialogs like, "Me: [said...]...She: [replied...]," that just didn't work in audible format. And the bit with him repeating "Greenwich Mean Time" got, well, repetitive (we got the joke already!). Next time, dear Stanley, get a better editor! Bottom line, I'm glad I bought/listened to "Taste," and recommend it, particularly to Stanley Tucci fans.

Typical Grisham Page-turner
Revisado: 05-17-22
Grisham fans won't be disappointed--definitely worthy of your time! You'll immediately recognize his creative plot twists and surprises. This is another Grisham tale destined to become a movie! As for narration: I'm a BIG fan of Mary-Louise Parker's movie & TV acting, but she gets a B- on her narration. I frequently became confused about which character was which when she was reading dialogue...there was very little attempt on her part to offer distinctly different-sounding people. Still, she certainly was easy to understand, and sold the emotional elements with her great acting chops.

In the dark, wintry highlands of Lochdubh, Scotland, where the local Calvinist element resists the secular trimmings of Christmas, the spirit of old Saint Nick is about as welcome as a flat tire on a deserted road. Nor is crime taking a holiday, as Constable Hamish Macbeth soon finds himself protecting an unhappy girl, unlocking the secrets of a frightened old woman, and retrieving some stolen holiday goods. Now the lanky lawman must use all his Highland charm and detective skills to make things right.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Beautiful story, beautifully read
Revisado: 09-25-21
Another Elizabeth Gaskell masterpiece, with plot twists and turns that hearken to Jane Austen. It took a while for this American's ear to become accustomed to the "veddy, veddy" British narrator's sometimes rushed style, but, using my Kindle's reading speed adjustment capability, the chore was lightened, and eventually, adjustment was unnecessary.
