Started so well!
Revisado: 08-24-11
While this technically isn't "steampunk" fiction, it is set in the Victorian era and magic sort of mixes with tech for an alternate reality - giving it a steampunk feel. I haven't read a single steampunk book that has left me satisfied. Which is why the first 1/2 of the book surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. Good pacing, interesting characters - nothing spectacular, but solid. The last half starts to drag and the last quarter... felt rushed, uneven, and somewhat thoughtless.
To add to all of that, the narrator, who had a lovely voice, needs a bit more experience. Her phrasing can be choppy and there are some mispronunciations that are annoying. If I could have given this book 2.5 stars, I would have.

Historia
When 15-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder - much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing, not even a smear of blood, to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

Ambivalent about this book.
Revisado: 09-13-10
I'd want to give this two stars but for a decent story that kept me listening. I really enjoy young adult fiction, but I found this author's descriptive style jarring. The seemingly endless similes, some of which made no sense and many that seemed the author was just trying too hard often pushed me out of the story space. I understand this is the author's first book, and her writing may improve as the series goes on.
The other reason for the potential for a low rating was the narrator. It sounds like she's in her teens - like the main character. She's not bad, but I have yet to hear a young reader with the range to do multiple voices decently. The next book has an adult narrator, which is another reason I may give it a chance.
I'm on the fence as to whether I'll listen to the next book.
