Historia
The Cadian Gate is broken, and the Imperium is riven in two. The might of the Traitor Legions, kept shackled for millennia behind walls of iron and sorcery, has been unleashed on a darkening galaxy. Among those seeking vengeance on the Corpse Emperor’s faltering realm are the Death Guard, once proud crusaders of the Legiones Astartes, now debased creatures of terror and contagion.

One of the best 40k books I have read
Revisado: 05-07-23
Chris Wraight is an excellent author, one of my favorites among those at Black Library. This book is in my opinion his personal best (and that's saying something, he's really really good). The characters and plot drag you in slowly, with two alternating storylines, one taking place prior to the current. This disjointed approach leads to several big payoffs as motivations are revealed out of "the past" in time for the reader to understand "the present." The characters are made to feel very human; despite being daemon corrupted piles of rot and disease, Wraight makes them feel understandable, if not exactly relatable. The Death Guard have an interesting juxtaposed nature in more ways than one, and he has captured it perfectly and woven it into an important story revealing big details of the initial events of the Dark Imperium storylines. Highly recommend for anyone that enjoys a good book, 40k or not.

One of the best in the series
Revisado: 09-14-22
A lot of threads, slowly drawn together. Aaron Dembski-Bowden is an incredibly gifted author, his elegant plotlines are always full of depth and demand 2nd, 3rd, and 4th readings (and more), to capture it all and find the foreshadowing hidden in plain sight throughout.

Among the best of 40k novels
Revisado: 07-28-21
This book is not just an excellent portrayal of a slice of time in Warhammer: 40k, it's a great read even for those relatively unfamiliar with the universe. Bowden does a a great job capturing a lot of human stories, combined with a well balanced plot full of highs and lows for every character. Keeble is the perfect narrator, especially for a writer in the style of Bowden, and does amazing job making every character more or less recognizable by by voice alone. The stereotypical brooding space marine is turned on its head; every one is very human, with guardsmen (it's impossible to not love Andre), citizens, generals, tanks, fighters, titans, even a bit of space action making this a very complete picture of the defense of a single city, the limited scope making the Armageddon war much more relatable.

Excellent writing, bad narration
Revisado: 02-18-21
This is one of the best, and arguably most important, books in the Heresy series. The authorship is masterly, Dembski-Bowden does an excellent job combining the sci-fi and fantasy elements of the 40k universe, and really establishes the Word Bearers place in the storyline. His style is somewhat classical, sometimes feels like it was written in the 18th or 19th century. However, Gareth Armstrong is one of the worst narrators on Audible. He has such a nice rich voice, great for plain narration parts (and you would think also for the deep-voiced Space Marines and Primarchs). Unfortunately, he is not very adept at character voicing, most characters sound the same, especially women (of which there are several in this story). Bad guys rarely sound like anything other than goblins, regardless of who or what they are. He also utilizes an unusual "yodeling" voice for certain characters that is simply ridiculous. Again, he is excellent when simply reading scene descriptions (and, to be fair, the occasional character) but overall hurts an otherwise amazing book. I would love to hear him narrate a non-fiction book with no dialog. When a book has such a mix of characters, I think a narrator along the lines of a Simon Prebble, capable of maintaining a large range of unique voices, would be far more appropriate.

Probably the best Salamanders book
Revisado: 04-28-20
Nick Kyme does an excellent job addressing the origins of the m40 Salamanders, and their particular culture/quirks in this book, as well as a few other legions. Concerning a small number of characters, all with their own interweaving storylines (both loyalist and traitor), but primarily a handful of high-ranking Salamanders, there are a few insights into the bigger picture of the Horus Heresy itself. Jonathan Keeble is among my favorite narrators on audible (check out The Winter King, by Bernard Cornwell), and he always makes the characters feel more alive.

David Fitzgerald's award-winning 2010 book, Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed At All, pointed out the top 10 fatal flaws of Christianity's origin story. Now, Jesus: Mything in Action presents the most compelling new findings in Jesus myth theory, critically examines its controversial reception by biblical scholars and the extent and reliability of our sources for Jesus, and reveals the surprising history behind Jesus' evolution.

Truly Excellent
Revisado: 03-19-20
David Fitzgerald is a superb communicator of the subject. While not as thorough (or perhaps I mean deep-diving?) as Carrier's On the Historicity of Jesus, this trilogy of books is an excellent break-down of the construction of the Jesus character, and of Christianity itself. Fitzgerald takes this subject seriously, but he is a legitimately funny writer. I really enjoyed him reading his own audiobook.

Perturabo - master of siegecraft and the executioner of Olympia. Long has he lived in the shadow of his more favoured primarch brothers, frustrated by the mundane and ignominious duties which regularly fall to his Legion. When Fulgrim offers him the chance to lead an expedition in search of ancient and destructive xenos weaponry, the Iron Warriors and the Emperor's Children unite and venture deep into the heart of the great star maelstrom that haunts Perturabo's dreams.

Awesome
Revisado: 01-15-19
One of the best of the series so far. Perturabo was a relative mystery to me, and he now seems like one of the more interesting Primarchs, especially among the Traitors. He is a complex character in an elegant plot, and the addition of regular (and excellent) action sequences make for some tense reading. Angel Exterminatus is longer than many (maybe most) of the H.H., and it flew by for me, not in small part to David Timson's great narration.

Historia
In every issue of modern society - from climate change to vaccinations, transportation to technology, health care to defense - we are in the midst of an unprecedented expansion of scientific progress and a simultaneous expansion of danger. At the very time we need them most, scientists and the idea of objective knowledge are being bombarded by a vast, well-funded, three-part war on science: the identity politics war on science, the ideological war on science, and the industrial war on science.

Religious fundamentalists and biblical literalists present any number of arguments that attempt to disprove evolution. Those with a sympathetic ear often fail to critically examine these creationist claims, leading to an ill-informed public and, perhaps more troubling, ill-advised public policy. As Aron Ra makes clear, however, every single argument deployed by creationists in their attacks on evolution is founded on fundamental scientific, religious, and historical falsehoods - all of them.

Phenomenal

Aron Ra absolutely has taken a place on my shelf next to Daniel Dennet, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens. Creationism isn't the only negative force in the world today, but with the undoing of education as its primary goal, I feel that it is one of the most urgent. Every year another class passes out of high school, and another enters kindergarten.
