ruined by voices
Revisado: 01-14-25
this is mediocre science fiction. competent but unspectacular writing combined with a compelling world. Unfortunately, the bulk of the worldbuilding was done in the previous trilogy, so if you try and read this one without having read that one, you will be lost. all in all...it's ok.
except for one thing. the narration- while fantastic when played straight, is cringe inducing torture for 40-60% of the book when the reader attempts alien voices. the voices are, at best, overdone, silly, annoying accents and, at worst, slobbering mushmouth that literally leave me nauseous. I hate it. I hate it so much. I don't know if I can finish because it's SO bad and the level of writing is just not good enough to compel me to put myself through it

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

jarring as a chicagoan
Revisado: 06-04-23
it's good. I mean, it's Stephen King, by this time you pretty much know what you're getting. personally, I have a preference for his earlier stuff- back when he'd still let his editors trim a thousand pages of fat from his stories, but that's just me.
the only real complaint I have is that it's so jarring to hear a character who's a Chicagoland native say things that only tourists would say. guaranteed rate field? everyone still calls it comiskey around here. going to chicago? nope. If you're in the city, you'd say a neighborhood. if you're in the suburbs, it's just called the city because it's the only one that matters. it's just a little weird.
