Historia
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

Have read all of Tara’s books. This one was a slog to get through. Finished it out of loyalty. The poor reviews should not be ignored.

Historia
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Powerful, means I'll, enjoyable. Must be read!

What starts out as a quirky read becomes a vivid tale of several lives that at first had no connection and in the end are deeply enmeshed.

Worth your time.
Revisado: 02-27-19
Enjoyed a nostalgic trip back in time, to a NY of my younger days. I was struck by the familiarity with fictional characters that caught the mood of the times. At the end, I felt satisfied with the use of my time and selected the first novel Barbash had written 16 years earlier for my next read.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Brilliant ending to a formidable series!
Revisado: 12-18-16
Archer should be applauded for this capstone of a book series. It leaves you wanting more of the family. There is enough left over for an epilogue of Giles, Sebastian and Jessica. Then Freddy, Jake and Lucy.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Historia
Investigator Arkady Renko, the pariah of the Moscow prosecutor's office, has been assigned the thankless job of investigating a new phenomenon: late-night subway riders report seeing the ghost of Joseph Stalin on the platform of the Chistye Prudy Metro station. The illusion seems part political hocus-pocus and also part wishful thinking, for among many Russians Stalin is again popular - the bloody dictator can boast a two-to-one approval rating.

Disappointed
Revisado: 08-31-07
Enjoyed most of previous Renko novels but this was disjointed. Transitions from one scene to another are not obvious, the reader is barely adquate, the multi-plots are confusing. Rather than understanding the sequence of events, character names, place names, etc. I just let it flow and hoped to pick up the pieces along the way. Not an easy read or listen.

Well crafted and informative
Revisado: 04-23-04
Helped me understand the dynamics of the times. Good story line that made me want to continue without stopping. Narrator voice was soothing but I do agree with some readers that everyone, male and female, tended to sound alike and it made me have to listen harder.
