Wonderful Flawed Protagonist
Revisado: 11-21-24
Really enjoy this series. Wasn't expecting a cliff hanger ending though.....how long do I have to wait to find out.....well that would be too much of a spoiler.

Excellent as always.
Revisado: 11-16-23
Wheeler is one of the best writers l have found in this genre (or any other for that matter). This prequel does not disappoint as it gives some of Ankorette’s backstory.

Historia
What begins as a typical day for Officer Bernadette Manuelito - serving a bench warrant, dealing with a herd of cattle obstructing traffic, and stumbling across a crime scene - takes an unexpected twist when she’s called to help find an old friend. Years ago, Bernie and Maya were roommates, but time and Maya’s struggles with addiction drove them apart. Now Maya’s brother asks Bernie to find out what happened to his sister. Tracing Maya’s whereabouts, Bernie learns that her old friend had confessed to the murder of her estranged husband, a prominent astronomer.

Disappointing secondary plot
Revisado: 12-19-22
Usually Hillerman's books do a great job of following 2 cases through out the book. This time the secondary case about drugs, a murdered baby and an abused woman are just dropped like bricks into various chapters with no real development. And not at all sure about what Leaphorn was up to or the point of his being contacted by a previously rescued woman. If Hillerman was trying to point out the epidemic of missing Native American women I feel like we never really got the picture as it relates to our protagonists.

Ignore worries about politics - no politics here
Revisado: 11-22-21
Previous reviews had me worried about politics in this divisive time. No worries, even though the pandemic is featured as part of the background for this story, it does not make any judgements about it. The story is the author's usual convoluted plot and of course involves all of the Three Pines characters we have come to appreciate.
