Historia
As the chief of police in Paris's seventh arrondissement, Commissaire Adamsberg has no jurisdiction in Ordebec. Yet, he cannot ignore a widow's plea. Her daughter Lina has seen a vision of the Ghost Riders with four nefarious men. According to the 1000-year-old legend, the vision means that the men will soon die a grisly death. When one of them disappears, Adamsberg races to Ordebec, where he becomes entranced by the gorgeous Lina - and embroiled in the small Normandy town's ancient feud.

Historia
From his bid to become Eudora Welty's lawn boy to the time George Plimpton offered to punch him in the nose, lineage has always been important to Rick Bass. Now at a turning point - in his midfifties, with his long marriage dissolved and his grown daughters out of the house - Bass strikes out on a journey of thanksgiving. His aim: to make a memorable meal for each of his mentors, to express his gratitude for the way they have shaped not only his writing but his life.

Revisado: 06-24-21
I really enjoyed traveling with Bass on so many levels. He's also an excellent narrator.
As a long-time reader of his non-fiction, which I discovered in grad school, I would love to see Audible produce The Deer Pasture, Wild to the Heart, Oil Notes, Winter, The Ninemile Wolves, The Lost Grizzlies and the 8 books that follow--and to have Bass read as many of them as possible.

Historia
In 1985, The Observer magazine sent Douglas Adams to Madagascar to look for the exotic and potentially extinct aye-aye lemur. There he met zoologist Mark Carwardine, and together they made a radio pilot about their travels, In Search of the Aye-Aye. This led to a hugely popular radio series, Last Chance to See, later adapted as a best-selling book. Douglas Adams died in 2001, but his friend Stephen Fry took his place for a follow-up 20th anniversary television series, broadcast on BBC Two in 2009.

Historia
This live performance of a powerful police procedural comes to life through the artistry of Celeste Lecesne and is accompanied by the original music of Duncan Sheik. Celeste portrays every character in a small Jersey Shore town as they unravel the story of Leonard Pelkey, a tenaciously optimistic and flamboyant 14-year-old boy who has gone missing. A luminous force of nature whose magic is only truly felt once he is gone, Leonard becomes an unexpected inspiration as the town’s citizens question how they live, who they love, and what they leave behind.

Thank you, James Lecesne. From the truths the writing presented, and how it could make you laugh one moment and cry the next, to the stunning virtuosity of performance (every character was so distinct), this one just blew me away.
I wanted it go on much longer, because I didn't want to leave Leonard.

This book made me laugh out loud so many times (the last part about Amy and the story of Izzy and Dana being definite exceptions). The self-deprecating humor of the writing was ehanced by the reader's performce--it was so on point.
Such a lovely, fun book. It was over too soon.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 06-18-19
This journey kept me glued to my Kindle. My grandfather's younger brother was an Air Force pilot, and all we know about his end (in the early 1950s) was that he was lost "in a training accident" with no other information ever provided, and no body to bury. I've seen how much that non-war moment impacted my family; listening to the stories of loss, haunted survival and generational fallout that war produces...I don't know if I can even express how that made me feel.
Thank you for this podcast.

Revisado: 06-12-19
The poetry was stunning; its vibrancy and intricacy of form just blew me away.
The stories of these performers lives and struggles against continual racism and abuse by the whites around them was wholly mesmerizing and angering.
And the performers? One of the most talented multi-voice recordings I have listened to (and I have rather a large audio collection, hmm hmm). Everyone was so strong.
My only "complaint" about this performance?
I didn't get to see it live.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

I normally love everything with Stephen Fry, but..
Revisado: 11-19-18
I'm not a super prude at all, but there was more than one time where this was just too much for me. I couldn't finish it. It was a bit over the top, for me, on shock (the vinettes where actors pretended to be the characters discussed) and a little less on the history than I expected.
I picked two free and purchased one. Now I wish I would have given this a miss and just picked the other two.
I found it weird that Twain's Feast had a not suitable for young listeners preamble but this one did not, and Twain's was much, much tamer. It discussed some tough issues concerning race, but in an open and thoughtful way.
Between the two, Victorian Secrets was definitely the one that should have had such a caution label on it.
