This book is a poignant, funny, sad and cogent account of a family’s journey with a child who has a serious and undiagnosed congenital blood disease. The father’s decision that he does not want children changes quickly when he meets his sick daughter at four months.

The book is well written. The writing style is enjoyable. The narration is terrific!

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The plot was good, the description of a Florida hurricane was correct, the connection between the heroine and her dog was spot on. I liked the narration

I completely enjoyed this book. I felt that I knew the characters from the beginning. My empathy was with Gonker and Fielding, strange as the man was. Very well done. Good narration.

Mother and son exchange a year's emails in which they explore their lives, memories, beliefs, today versus the past. It is very unusual in its format and very effective. I loved it and recommend it.

I like books with dog heroes now that I have a Labrador retriever of my own. The mystery was simple and interesting. The characters were well developed and reflected the mountain people of North Carolina. An odd feature was that the "good" characters, such as Raine Stockton, did not have NC accents. Otherwise, The narration was flawless. I would recommend this book.

This book contains two simultaneous stories, Mara's more poignant than Scott's but both moving and wonderful. Character development was very good.

I am strongly in favor of a person's right to due, particularly when confronted by a terrible fatal disease so I was pleased with how Mara's story progressed.

The narrator was excellent.

I look forward to more by this author and narrator.

Scout comes home for a visit from New York in the midst of the early 69's civil rights struggle. There is not a rape or trial as in the first book but Ms Lee digs deeply into the characters and makes Atticus a real, flawed man who Scout discovers for the first time. I enjoyed the book and hope it becomes a film for all to enjoy as we have enjoyed Mockingbird. PS I don't believe this was reworked to become To Kill A Mockingbird.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The book never told us how dogs love us. It explained over and over how awake dogs were used to map the canine brain.

What could Gregory Berns have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He wrote the book he set out to write. The title does not explain what the book is about.

Did LJ Ganser do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes.

What character would you cut from How Dogs Love Us?

None.

Any additional comments?

I want authors to be clear about their intentions and subject matter.

True stories are always interesting to me. This was no exception. The disappearance of Colonel Fawcett and two others while on an exploration expedition of the Amazon in the 1920's in well known. This author gives us a good back story on the man and his motives for risking his life and fortunes and those of his oldest son and the son's best friend.
