Revisado: 08-12-24
I became a Kristin Hannah fan while reading The Women, and Julia Whelen is the perfect narrator for this equally moving tale. I loved the strong characters and was drawn in by the unique challenges of living through the brutal Alaskan winters without the comforts most of us are used to. Memorable in every way,

A troubled, gifted man reads his own life story
Revisado: 11-15-22
I wasn't sure what to expect when I began listening to this memoir but was grateful for the candor and, yes, humor, that a man whose friends and family know as "Matty" was able to deliver. As a "Friends" fan, I'm amazed that anyone burdened by such deep addiction and abandonment issues could play the lovable Chandler Bing for so long...it just goes to show the depths of his acting ability. He says that he wrote this book to help others. I'm sure it will.

Terrific in every way!
Revisado: 10-31-22
This autobiography will give you new respect for Norah's sister Delia, the lesser known of the three Ephron sisters. Read by the author, Left on Tenth is both funny and heart wrenching, as she loses her husband to cancer, falls in love again, and is diagnosed with the same disease that claimed her sister's life. I loved every minute, right down to the happy ending!

Not her best.
Revisado: 09-25-22
I have enjoyed many of Jodi Picoult's novels but the narrator in this one was really intolerable, especially when she attempts to lower her voice to 'become' the male characters. I also found the plot very slow. No thanks.

Historia
In her phenomenally popular essays and long-running Tumblr blog, Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and body, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined", Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care.

Raw and engaging from start to finish.
Revisado: 09-25-22
The author's reading her own very moving story moved the needle from good to great for me. As the daughter of a photographer who grew up very weight conscious and always felt I had to 'please my dad' with my shape and size, I felt compassion for Roxane Gay, who has written candidly about what it is like to be morbidly obese in a world that is obsessed with thinness. Stories about her early childhood sexual trauma are followed by very personal anecdotes of how she has attempted to self-soothe and even begin to love her body, Highly recommend.

Historia
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

As an English major, I can't believe that I never read this masterwork. Gyllenhaal's narration brings Plath's words to life as though channeling her spirit. As I listened, I couldn't help wondering what other stories and poems the world might have gained had she found the strength and courage to live. Not just a tome for adolescents...this is a book for everyone to hear.

In Sister Mother Husband Dog, Delia Ephron brings her trademark wit and effervescent prose to a series of autobiographical essays about life, love, writing, movies, and family. From keen observations on modern living, the joy of girlfriends, and best-friendship, to a consideration of the magical madness and miracle of dogs, to haunting recollections of life with her famed screenwriter mother and growing up the child of alcoholics, Ephron's eloquent style and voice illuminate every moment of this superb and singular work.

Wonderful--made even better by Meg Ryan
Revisado: 05-28-22
Many great audio books are ruined by the voices of those who read them aloud. Delia Ephron's prose, especially the beginning about her relationship with her sister Norah during the last months of her life, comes to life in the narration of Meg Ryan. Though she is a familiar voice, that familiarity doesn't overshadow Ephron's story. The many films that the Ephron sisters wrote together, some of which Ryan starred in, seem to have given her a knack for their combined voice, which makes the book seem as though it is being read by a friend of theirs who knows Delia well and can tell her story. There is humor, loss, sentiment, and much love here. A winner.

I had looked forward to this autobiography but unfortunately Katie's voice is way too chirpy as she tells her own story (funny, she even talks about having been coached by a voice teacher early in her career to avoid this)...and it's just not very well written. Too bad.
