This is fascinating material but this reader just create a compelling voice. I gave up on listening and read the book instead, which is quite good.

I just wanted a good dramatization of Macbeth and this one had high ratings so I bought it. I didn't realize until it started that it was filled with commentary every 5 or 10 lines. I've studied Shakespeare at a high level under Paul Cubeta and I expected this commentary to be distracting and written at the lowest possible level. Neither is remotely the case. It is excellent work.

More importantly, the woman who does the narrating is quite an actor herself and sets the emotional pitch of her commentary to match the scene. She almost sounds like another character in the play.

This is a remarkable achievement.

Reader's pronunciation is a major distraction

What didn’t you like about Dave Hoffman’s performance?

The reader mispronounces so many words, so many times, and it grates every time. I'll guess that somewhere around 98% of readers know how to pronounce Somme. David Hoffman doesn't, and you'll hear him read "Somma" multiple times a page.

Tim Robbins can't act without a director

I know Tim Robbins and I have liked him in his movies, so I was pleased to see that he would narrate this story. But he needs a director that knows the story well and who can bring his silly time swings under control. One character is read as constantly whistful, so much so that I always have to turn up the volume to hear what he's saying. This will be followed by loud screams that are hardly necessitated by the text. I eventually had to stop listening and just read it. One of the worst performances I've ever heard. He's clearly not a literary guy. He can afford a director. He needs to hire one.
