Historia
Michael is coming undone. Adrift after his wife's departure, he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Becoming ever more reclusive, he’ll do anything to avoid his empty house. Marnie, on the other hand, is stuck. Hiding alone in her London flat, she avoids old friends and any reminders of her rotten, selfish ex-husband. Curled up with a good book, she’s battling the long afternoons of a life that feels like it’s passing her by.

Too much unnecessary detail
Revisado: 12-11-24
This was very ordinary and not what I’ve come to expect from Laplante. At times quite tedious.

All the rave reviews. What am I missing?
Revisado: 10-08-24
I got so sick of this woman’s wisdom and magical thinking I couldn’t wait for it to end. I have read another book by this author and enjoyed it. She writes and reads beautifully but the lyricism was over the top for me.

Historia
DS Lucas Walker is on leave in his hometown, Caloodie, looking after his dying grandmother. When two young German backpackers vanish from the area on their way to a ranch, he finds himself unofficially on the case. Historia
On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river. Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of family keepsakes.

Not so much
Revisado: 05-18-24
I have enjoyed previous books by this author. Not so much this one. The neurotic and crazy ramblings of this woman drove me to distraction and it went on and on. Can’t believe the rave reviews. The books are relatively well written for this genre despite her occasional mention of parts of the body that don’t exist, ventricular artery? Arsenic smelling like bitter almonds? Minor points but something that could have been researched. Excellent narrator.

When Monty Don's golden retriever, Nigel, became the surprise star of BBC's Gardeners' World, inspiring huge interest, fan mail and even his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply. In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog - charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are. He is also a much loved family pet. He is also a star. By telling Nigel's story, Monty relates his relationships with other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present.

Meandering and disappointing.
Revisado: 11-02-23
Too long and drawn out. I found myself losing track for lack of interest. The 3 other books i read by this author were excellent and made more so by the narrator. With this book the narration wasn’t as dynamic maybe because the story was so lack luster and the protagonist was not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.
