The book begins and continues on till just before the end like a series of rough drafts layered on top of each other, getting swapped around sometimes. I feel like the book might have been better received by fans if Adrien just came out with the groundhog’s day conceit of the plot a bit sooner, maybe towards the latter half of the beginning, one of the beginnings anyway. As is, it feels more frustrating for the reader than the characters. But if you stay till the end, the payoff is amazing. The binding principle of each of the Children series is that the end that you expect comes, and then you find out that it’s not at all what you expected. It doesn’t end, something new just begins.

The only comparison that I have for the sheer scale of this novel is the Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath, but while that is dark comedy, this is a realistic space adventure paired with the societal evolution of an entire species. It goes back and forth between the parallel timelines of our descendants and their distant and very different cousins. While it could read like a GRR Martin history book, fantastic as those are, it instead explains things on a very personal level before expanding to the global implications. The resonating and interwoven effects of character actions are very much a theme of the book. The sense of time and scale are epic, and the ending brought tears to my eyes. I love it.

Whereas Artifact Space is more cerebral and platonic, Against All Gods is a visceral action adventure story filled with blood, breasts, blood, broken bones, more blood, boobs, and did I mention blood? This needs to be turned into a STARZ series. It’s been compared to Madeline Miller’s Circe, and there are some similarities, but the tone is very different, as is the implicit male gaze of the author vs the female gaze in Circe. That’s not a knock against this book mind you, and it has a very strong female cast, it’s just a perspective. I await the next entry with great interest.

The first act is a bit dense in the exposition. It’s an entrance to a distinct sci-if universe and it can make you feel just as overwhelmed as Marka, but if you make it past the shake-down cruise, you’re in for an odyssey. Some of the twists you’ll see coming, others you won’t. The ending is a little anticlimactic, but it should lead to a good follow up in the next novel.
