Historia
As the fatherless biracial child of a Mexican immigrant, Danny Donnelly was never expected to amount to much. Before the age of nine, his single mother had moved her seven children more than thirty times—from the impoverished streets of South Central Los Angeles to rural Oregon and everywhere in between.

Inspiration to pursue your dreams
Revisado: 11-07-24
Zoro’s life story is an inspiration for all of us to find our passion and live out our purpose—no matter the odds against us. Zoro does not portray he and his family as victims of poverty, but as those who overcame through perseverance, hard work, ingenuity and faith! His story reads like Forrest Gump’s. Zoro kept moving forward despite many setbacks. He kept believing and dreaming to become one of the greatest drummers of our times. It’s a wonderful book, read by Zoro himself.

Historia
1867, Richmond, Virginia: Though she wears the same low-cut purple gown that is the uniform of all the girls who work at Worsham's gambling parlor, Arabella stands apart. It's not merely her statuesque beauty and practiced charm. Even at seventeen, Arabella possesses an unyielding grit, and a resolve to escape her background of struggle and poverty. Collis Huntington, railroad baron and self-made multimillionaire, is drawn to Arabella from their first meeting. Collis is married and 30 years her senior, yet they are well-matched in temperament, and flirtation rapidly escalates into an affair.

Sweet Demon
Revisado: 09-06-24
Sweet Demon was Colis Huntington’s pet name for his mistress and later wife, Arabella. I think that fits because she is a portrait in contradictions. I sympathized with her poverty and desperation, and later admired her loyalty to family, However, I found her drive and ambition to be rooted in narcissism. She seemed to have a disregard for those she hurt and betrayed. “I didn’t take anything that wasn’t freely given to me,” she said when confronted by Huntington’s wife about her long-time affair with Huntington. That said, I enjoyed learning about the Huntington family from her perspective.

Historia
The Kennedy name has long been synonymous with wealth, power, glamor, and—above all else—integrity. But this carefully constructed veneer hides a dark truth: the pattern of Kennedy men physically and psychologically abusing women and girls, leaving a trail of ruin and death in each generation’s wake. Through decades of scandal after scandal—from sexual assaults to reputational slander, suicides to manslaughter—the family and their defenders have kept the Kennedy brand intact.

Dispelling American Myth
Revisado: 08-17-24
I think any of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s knew that the Kennedy family was riddled with flaws and curses, but I had no knowledge of the outright immorality, narcissism and hedonism of the Kennedy men. The misogyny was and is at a deplorable level. My heart breaks for the women who came into the gravitational pull of the Kennedy family. None seem to come out alive or well.

Celebration of Bad Character
Revisado: 02-06-24
I kept looking for a redemptive message in this book, but it never showed up—unless you think that cheating cheaters, and stealing from the rich to give to yourself (and your sick mother) is redemptive.

Reads like a novel but so much historical information!
Revisado: 11-29-23
This is so well researched. I appreciate how the author connected the dots across countries, industries and two world wars. I could not stop listening. The mystery still looms large!

Historia
For years, guitarist Quinn Porter has been on the road, chasing gig after gig, largely absent to his twice-ex-wife Belle and their odd, Guinness records-obsessed son. When the boy dies suddenly, Quinn seeks forgiveness for his paternal shortcomings by completing the requirements for one of his son's unfinished Boy Scout badges. For seven Saturdays Quinn does yard work for Ona Vitkus, the spry 104-year-old Lithuanian immigrant the boy had visited weekly.

Redemptive on many levels
Revisado: 08-04-22
This story of great loss is also a story of great love, transformation and unlikely but life-giving connections. Woods writes with such beauty and insight into the facets of every character. The reader is reminded that every precious life—-young and old, rich and poor, broken and bullied—is of infinite value. I loved every word of this beautiful, redemptive story.

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

“Britt Marie Was Here” is an endearing story that captured by heart. It’s like watching a caterpillar painstakingly twist and turn in her cocoon, not quite sure if she wants to become a butterfly. But Britt Marie does fly, while helping others to fly too.
