Historia
Caleb Carr has had special relationships with cats since he was a young boy in a turbulent household, famously peopled by the founding members of the Beat Generation, where his steadiest companions were the adopted cats that lived with him both in the city and the country. As an adult, he has had many close feline companions, with relationships that have outlasted most of his human ones. But only after building a three-story home in rural, upstate New York did he enter into the most extraordinary of all of his cat pairings: Masha, a Siberian Forest cat who had been abandoned as a kitten.

Historia
The language of genes has become common parlance. We know they make your eyes blue, your hair curly or your nose straight. The media tells us that our genes control the risk of cancer, heart disease, alcoholism or Alzheimer's. The cost of DNA sequencing has plummeted from billions of pounds to a few hundred, and gene-based advances in medicine hold huge promise. So we've all heard of genes, but how do they actually work?

The front lines of research
Revisado: 08-02-19
Interesting overview of research into the many subtle variables affecting gene expression and regulation. While celebrating how far we have come, the author resists neat conclusions and shows how much we still have to discover. I particularly liked the chapter on Stickleback hips. For the narration, I didn't care for the bad accents but understand that the narrator was often quoting her colleagues directly.

Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

An interesting life
Revisado: 07-04-19
You don’t need to be surfer to read this book, though it might help. Part autobiography, part travelogue; it is the story of the author’s life growing up in California and Hawaii, his relationships, his travels in pursuit of waves when the world was less travelled, and of growing into middle-age. Surfing is the thread and passion that runs throughout a restless life. The author is introspective, frank and avoids sentimentality. The book is well written and narrated (Audible).

Fascinating but challenging.
Revisado: 06-07-19
Well written and well narrated, The first few chapters grabbed my interest, but then it started getting difficult (at least for me). I returned to it after listening to 'Biology: The Science of Life - The Great Courses' (excellent) and was able to understand and appreciate the wonder of Life Ascending all the better for it.

Excellent introduction
Revisado: 06-03-19
I really liked this. I came to this series of lectures after struggling with other books on genetics and evolution. At around 30 mins each, the Audible lectures were ideal for my daily commute. Dr. Nowicki's explanations are clear and engaging. He maps out the science and the history and the people behind it. The content was fascinating and challenging enough that I often had to listen more than once or reinforce with videos from YouTube. But, the sense of learning was satisfying and I am now able to tackle other books on related subjects.
