It doesn't take much for the vicar of a nearby village to persuade Agatha Raisin to help publicize the church fair, especially when the fair's organizer, George Selby, turns out to be a gorgeous widower. Agatha brings out the crowds for the fair, all right, but there's more going on than innocent village fun. Several of the offerings in the jam-tasting booth turn out to be poisoned, and the festive family event becomes the scene of two murders.

Fate draws Bertie back to Totleigh Towers, home of the horrifyingly drippy Madeline Bassett and the simply horrifying Watkyn "Pop" Bassett. Bertie is worried, as the only obstacle to a trip down the aisle for him and Madeline is the fact that his friend Gussie and Madeline are in love with each other.

Reports of a haunted house soon have amateur sleuth Agatha Raisin snooping around, only to discover the victim of the haunting is a universally disliked old biddy on whom someone is playing a practical joke. But then the old lady is murdered and, for Agatha, solving a crime is much more fun than ghost-busting. Very soon she’s up to her usual tricks, involving the villagers, local police, and, naturally, her handsome new neighbor.
