Cute story
Revisado: 03-17-25
I love a good isekai, and this one hits all the right notes. My problem is with the narrators. They both have excellent voices, they speak clearly and are paced nicely, but neither one is suited for either cuteness or spice. Nonfiction exposé about the sordid lives of historical figures? Absolutely. Complicated spy thrillers? Sure. Hijinks and sexy times? They’re far too dry.

God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

…but I am really struggling with both the narrator and Butler’s narrative style. Thigpen has a beautiful, mellifluous voice but I just don’t buy her as our 18year old protagonist.

Historia
Sir Horley Comewithers isn’t particularly interested in getting married, especially when his match is a perfectly respectable young woman. Sir Horley is, after all, extravagantly gay. But he’s resigned to a fate there’s no point resisting—until a dear friend does it for him. Arabella Tarleton has no interest in romance, but even she can see that Sir Horley’s nuptials are destined to end in a lifetime of misery. Well, not on her watch. And what are friends for, if not abducting you on the night before your wedding in an overdramatic attempt to save you from a terrible mistake?

Platonic perfection
Revisado: 12-20-24
All the farcical fun of Something Fabulous, all the under-represented character exploration of Something Spectacular, and a perfect representation of fully adult platonic love. I loved every single minute of this book. Arabella Tarelton makes me feel seen in ways I never imagined possible for mainstream fiction. Honestly, 7/5 stars, will definitely be a frequent re-listen.

Absolutely love the story, the dynamic between Bel, Nico, and Garren is fun and entertaining. Don’t love having three different readers, especially when one of them is the incredibly talented Greg Boudreaux.

Fun characters, good plot
Revisado: 08-17-24
Police procedurals aren’t usually my jam, but queer shifters are so I figured I’d give it a shot. Definitely worth it. Dex and Sloane are a classic grumpy/sunshine with a great dynamic. Add in a heavy dose of forbidden romance and an antagonistic best friend and you’ve got a fun ride from beginning to end.

Nigel Barrett has spent his whole life preparing for the Culling, a spell-casting competition that determines which of the world’s teenage magicians will be stripped of their powers to preserve magical balance. But nothing could have prepared him to face Ori Olson, a broody rival whose caustic wit cloaks a painful past. From the moment Nigel and Ori meet, sparks fly. Their powers are stronger, more thrilling, the closer they get—not that they can risk becoming attached.

Nigel and Ori are both so stinking adorable and I want more of them. I want to follow them as they truly come into their power, and as they explore their connection. I want to see how they shape their world for a more just society. I want to watch their soul-deep connection grow into something special and comfortable and all encompassing. I want more.

Worse yet, this happens in front of his new crush, Leo, the dreamy football star who just moved to town. Fantastic.

Seriously, it’s a great story and I can’t wait for the next one in the series. However, the narrator has decided to take some voices in a different direction than the previous two books. I don’t hate it, but I preferred the original accents.

What a beautiful surprise!
Revisado: 02-27-24
Things I absolutely loved about this book:
The characters aren’t children. Rune is at least 35 years old and is still rather young for his race, which seems reasonable given an expected three digit lifespan.
The feelings of the seventeen year old are considered and handled appropriately.
The friendship full of love between Rune and Brand. Romantic love is great and all, but platonic relationships typically suffer when romance thrives. That doesn’t happen here, instead the friends work on how to fit Rune’s budding feelings into their dynamic.
The fated relationship (tala) isn’t necessarily romantic at all. It might not even be cooperative. The fact that there’s this element of fate that could be adversarial is an interesting twist on an overused trope. Addam is obviously leaning hard into romance, but Rune isn’t going to just let it happen without questions.
Everyone is bisexual, and that’s just beautiful.
The mythology is fresh and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Rune’s world.
Josh Hurley is an exceptional narrator who brings everyone to life.
