Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Nothing "goes viral". If you think a popular movie, song, or app came out of nowhere to become a word-of-mouth success in today's crowded media environment, you're missing the real story. Each blockbuster has a secret history - of power, influence, dark broadcasters, and passionate cults that turn some new products into cultural phenomena. In his groundbreaking investigation, Atlantic senior editor Derek Thompson uncovers the hidden psychology of why we like what we like.

Most Advanced Yet Achievable

Explains principles that makes hits hits. Learn next concepts on examples.
We like what we know yet there is an acceptable novelty or challenge in it.
We want unique belonging and familiarly new.
Most Advanced Yet Achievable.
Teenageers seek to be the Most Autonomous Yet Appropriate.
Best story is an emotional rollercoaster.
Fashion matures through: controversy » trend » mainstream » awkwardness.
A popularity is created by a few big broadcasters rather than just a noname crowd.
Value of a social network is its size squared.
We talk 80% of time about ourselves in online vs. 33 % in person.
Culture is how we want to be perceived, not what we really do.
We write about ideal ourselves and want to find ourselves in post of others as well.
YouTube seems more personal than broadcasting though.
People like to share their weirdness in a small group.
Premium TV subscriptions like Netflix allowed more startup-like bets on movies vs. just mainstream likability of broadcast TV.

What were they thinking?
Revisado: 02-07-21
A very valuable read for anybody who trips into the wild.
It describes commonalities that usually precede any disaster on examples of real accidents.
Biggest outcome: there is rarely a single thing that went wrong. Rather a chain of small problems and bad decisions pile up without us noticing.
Beware of unpredictability of tightly coupled complex systems. A simple rope can act as one.
A great concept of emotional bookmarks explains how we can act dumb without even noticing we set a stage for a disaster.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

A map of path towards excellence
Revisado: 02-06-21
A genius' map of path towards excellence through curiosity and dedication.
A great journey through masterpieces explaining how they changed a world of art and how Leonardo's master formed.
Especially inspiring is a breath and depth of his knowledge, experience and obsession with understanding the whole world.
Fascinating to learn how many fields of science he defined a base for centuries before others had to rediscover it independently again, because he was interested solely to understand but not to educate.
The accompanying pdf helped to see the art, but it is too low-fi to admire it.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

If you're like many people, you might associate debate with a school club, or perhaps a TV political debate that features two or more candidates talking over each other. But if these are your only associations with debating, you're missing out on an intellectual pursuit that can help you in all aspects of your daily life. The ability to debate - to present persuasive arguments, pierce the logic of others, and turn the tables against withering cross-examinations - is one of the truest tests of one's intellectual capacity.

Helps to prepare for important debate
Revisado: 01-23-21
How to create arguments, structure the debate and fight opponent's fallacies to persuade an audience to adopt your point of view.
Kind of systematic approach that helps when the debating parties respect at least basic rules: a topic to debate and equal time to talk.
The biggest value is it helps to prepare a strategy and potential reactions to typical situations that happen in the debate.

Historia
"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." Anecdotes how ego worked against greatest minds.
Revisado: 01-19-20
Insightful anecdotes illustrate how ego worked against even the greatest minds and prevent falling into the same trap earlier. The form of anecdotes actually help to connect with your own past failures if you actually already managed to fuck it up in person:)
Do & work rather than talk & be.
Grow as a student, learn from others, assist and empower them.
Do the right thing, the effort is enough.
Focus on results instead of just passion.
Judge by own standards, not what others think. Focus on what’s important to you, not every opportunity. Don’t show-off.
Be humble, keep your identity small, get out of your own head.
Start small, scale up.
Accept failure publicly, learn from instead of trying to save face.
You decide if your time is alive and dead.

Historia
Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed best seller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind - that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie.

We behave like an elephant herd driven on a path
Revisado: 07-21-18
How to introduce a change when people don’t want or aren’t motivated to change?
Nice framework with examples built around a model of a (rational) driver driving an (emotional) elephant on a path (environment) in a herd (others).
Elephant won't move unless convinced.
Driver can agonize to find the best solution for ages.
Changing a behavior might be easier just by changing a situation people are in.
Behavior of others works as a social norm that shapes how individuals behave.
How to find the right behavior to drive the process of the change? How to deal with a situation when the change is in a conflict with what people identify with?
Pretty good framework to find out how to solve all of that.
Framework to simplify the path to change:
1. Direct the rider (give reason and clear instructions and goal)
– Find bright spots
– Point to the destination
2. Motivate the elephant (power of emotions)
– Find the feeling
– Build identity
– Build growth mindset
3. Shape the path (change situation)
– Break/tweak the environment
– Rally the herd
– Build habits

Effective communication and leading people
Revisado: 07-05-18
Extensive list of essential, powerful and very practical principles for effective interpersonal communication, convincing and leading people.
The audiobook is quite intense; there is not a single redundant word in the entire book.
I recommend really everybody to read it as early in life as he is ready for it and periodically re-read or verify excerpts whether he really lives up to the principles.
