Historia
With Barack Obama's historic election in 2008, pundits proclaimed the Republicans as dead as the Whigs of yesteryear. Yet even as Democrats swooned, a small cadre of Republican operatives, including Karl Rove, Ed Gillespie, and Chris Jankowski, began plotting their comeback with a simple yet ingenious plan. These men had devised a way to take a tradition of dirty tricks - known to political insiders as "ratf**king" - to a whole new unprecedented level.

A good outline of how one party used the redistricting process to its advantage while the other party appeared to be clueless.
Revisado: 10-30-24
This was o good overview of how redistricting practices violate the principle of democracy. It would be even better in Kindle form where you could see the the incumbency promoting gerrymandered maps that the author describes.

Historia
The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

This was well read and well written. A very good history. It is a salutary tale of corporate overage, and the dangers of a badly divided country.

Historia
In Phryne's third adventure, Phryne is off to Ballarat for a week of fabulousness, but the sedate journey by train turns out to be far from the restful trip she was planning. What was planned as a restful country sojourn turns into the stuff of nightmares: a young girl who can't remember anything, rumours of vile white slavery and the body of an old woman missing her emerald rings.

Danger, excitement and love - this is how the glamorous Phryne Fisher is determined to live her life in her second enticing adventure. Walking the wings of a Tiger Moth plane in full flight ought to be enough excitement for most people, but not Phryne Fisher, amateur detective, woman of mystery, as delectable as the finest chocolate and as sharp as razor blades.

Historia
From award-winning scholar John Bergsma comes an intriguing audiobook that reveals new insights on the Essenes, a radical Jewish community predating Christianity, whose existence, beliefs, and practices are often overlooked in the annuls of history. Bergsma reveals how this Jewish sect directly influenced the beliefs, sacraments, and practices of early Christianity and offers new information on how Christians lived their lives, worshiped, and eventually went on to influence the Roman Empire and Western civilization.

The Essence and Christian connection
Revisado: 05-02-24
This was an excellent book for a Christian and anyone with an open mind. It provides strong evidence of the close connection between Christianity and second Temple Judaism and of the likelihood that the Christian Bible was actually written by the authors to whom it has been attributed.

Historia
Today, in the midst of a new economic crisis and severe political discord, the nature of capitalism in United States is at a crossroads. Since the market crash and Great Recession of 2008, historian Jonathan Levy has been teaching a course to help his students understand everything that had happened to reach that disaster and the current state of the economy, but in doing so he discovered something more fundamental about American history. Now, in an ambitious single-volume history of the United States, he reveals how capitalism in America has evolved through four distinct ages.

Empires of the Sea tells the story of the 50-year world war between Islam and Christianity for the Mediterranean: one of the fiercest and most influential contests in European history. It traces events from the appearance on the world stage of Suleiman the Magnificent through "the years of devastation" when it seemed possible that Islam might master the whole sea, to the final brief flourishing of a united Christendom in 1571.

History at its BEST
Revisado: 02-04-24
A compelling narrative, with fascinating context and full description. This history is even handed, and respectful. Honestly, I was on the edge of my seat anxious to know who won the various battles and sieges. And, in a sense, given the the slaughter and cruelty of both sides, no one one. This was audiobook at its finest.

Historia
In this electrifying social and intellectual history, Paula Fredriksen answers the question of how Jewish missionaries ended up inaugurating a movement that would grow into the gentile church by reconstructing the life of the earliest Jerusalem community. As her account arcs from this group’s hopeful celebration of Passover with Jesus, through their bitter controversies that fragmented the movement’s midcentury missions, to the city’s fiery end in the Roman destruction of Jerusalem, she brings this vibrant apostolic community to life.

The title is misleading
Revisado: 01-29-24
From the title I was hoping for a history of the lives, rituals, beliefs, and communities of the first Christians in Israel. While the book touches on this, it does so to ‘debunk’ the Gospels and deny the divinity of Jesus. So, if you are a Christian, as I am, there is not enough information about the lives of early Christian communities to justify listening to this book. I have read books by
non-Christian’s authors on Christian history and found them interesting informative and enlightening. This book was NOT one of those books.
