Historia
No, the "Moonstone" isn't a celestial relic, it's a gigantic yellow diamond of unearthly beauty that was given to Rachel Verinder as a present on her 18th birthday - and stolen that very night! Betteredge, one of the most beloved butlers in English literature, is the focus of this seminal detective novel, which examines how one family's life is turned upside-down by the theft. And find out why the answers to all of life's problems can be found in the pages of Robinson Crusoe.

Don't steal sacred diamonds
Revisado: 12-01-07
The performance was outstanding. I usually do not think much of using multiple readers for novels, but in this case it truly added to the book.
The Moonstone, a valuable diamond that has already been stolen once, is stolen again. There are 7 (8?) narratives that tell the story of the mayhem surrounding the loss of the diamond and attempts to discover the thief and recover it.
What I don't see noted in many of the reviews of this book is the humor. There is drama and mystery, love and death, but this is a funny book. Betteridge, the Butler, with his fierce allegiance to Robinson Crusoe is perhaps one of my all-time favorite characters.
I agree that it does seem longer than it is -- even when it ended, there was still more to go. Part of it's Victorian charm, I suppose. I'm going to recommend this one to anyone who has the patience for it. Not a quick read, but a worthwhile one.

A good read
Revisado: 05-08-07
Corporate espionage is interesting! The title is kind of lame, but apt. This was an engrossing tale, well told, with enough turns to keep you interested. Well read by (I believe) Scott Brick, as always. There is the obligatory love interest but it's not overdone or corny and it's completely relevant. I'm going to look for more titles by this author.

Historia
All the stories in this collection from Stephen King are related to the Vietnam War. King fans will recognize echoes of The Dark Tower series in the collection's first story, "Low Men in Yellow Coats." As the characters develop over the next four stories, King's version of the Vietnam War becomes one of his most frightening tales ever.

Wow
Revisado: 05-08-07
I knew that the movie had been well received, but wasn't too sure what I would think of a series of related stories. I was surprised when it didn't seem that way at all; they really hung together. This was a memorable book that I looked forward to listening to on my commutes. Stephen King is getting better and better.

The Movie was Better
Revisado: 11-16-05
There really wasn't much more to the book than there was in the movie. I didn't realize until after I'd purchased this title that I'd seen this on DVD about a year ago. Because everyone knows that the book is always much better than the book I decided to listen to it anyway. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't already seen the movie.
What made me completely nuts was that the reader made Merrick sound like Ahhhnold. I believe he was supposed to be French? Most of the voices were a little too over the top, but this one took the cake.

In his tantalizing debut novel, Paradise Salvage, at once a taut thriller and a lyrical coming-of-age story, John Fusco marvelously traces the unforgettable trajectory of 12-year-old Nunzio Paradiso's last summer of innocence.

Hey! I know these people!
Revisado: 11-16-05
You'll feel like you've lived next door to this family for years. The characters are real and knowable. A-plus for character development.
The story-line is a little less great. Kind of predictable, not completely suspension-of-disbelief-able, but not too terrible. Just okay. But the characters make it worth it. I believe this is a new author (though I could be wrong) and look forward to seeing more from him as his storytelling skills grow.

Read this book
Revisado: 11-16-05
It is a valuable book that can entertain as well as teach. Ozeki builds diverse and interesting characters and then throws in some valuable agricultural education. There is no preaching at the reader, but plenty of illumination. This book has changed the way our family shops and eats.
Oh, yeah, the story's great too. There's plenty of heartbreak and humor, lots of fancy, and a glimpse into a a few different ways of life here. The characters are imperfect and real. This is one to pay attention to.
As always, Anna Fields did a great job reading.

Revisado: 11-16-05
This book is totally fascinating. I learned so many amazing things listening to this book, and gained so many insights, I can't recommend this book enough. Some ideas are rehashed a couple of times, but I also learned that this is the nature of an autistic, so that's cool. All animal lovers should read this and learn from it.

Time film critics Richard Schickel and Richard Corliss tell Charlie Rose how they made their selections for the magazine's All-Time 100 Movies list. The list ranges far and wide, from 8-1/2 to The 400 Blows; from A Hard Day's Night to Day for Night; from King Kong to The Fly to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. And while it includes such perennial favorites as Casablanca and Citizen Kane, it also includes some surprises.

Great true-to-life adventure
Revisado: 11-16-05
For the first quarter of this book I thought I'd purchased a a non-fiction title, it was so realistic. I am a fan of Bernard Cornwell's writings but had not read anything he'd written about modern times. This was very well done. The main character was likeable, flawed, and understandable. There were no cardboard cutouts among the supporting cast. The predictable happy ending was nicely avoided. Very well done - I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys drama, adventure, or the consideration of human motivations.

Did this end suddenly?
Revisado: 11-16-05
or did I miss a download? I had a hard time believing that the main character was stupid enough to keep the company he kept. A real agent would know better, even if he is bitter and retired. Otherwise this was an entertaining and educational listen.
