With the enemies closing in from outside the wards, and those managing to break through, Violet Sorrengail is making decisions she knows could mean the lives of those around her along with her own. Unable to know who inside their ranks might be working for those who wish to destroy them, she must seek allies outside the Aretian wards, while also discovering who she is and where she fits in this world.

However, her search isn't confined to finding allies but encompasses the need for answers to keep her dragons and those she loves safe, especially him. She breaks rules and defies commands to overcome the shadow that is swiftly falling not only on Aretia but her own future.

While answers elude her and her dragons, her friends, and her love come under an ever-tightening darkness, she finds herself tossed into seas even she may never be able to navigate, finding answers that terrify her more than anything else has since the world she knew began to change. And her losses may be more than her heart can bear.

This volume, by far, is the most intense and eye-opening of the entire story. The things we learn are not only unexpected but devastating. And that cliffhanger... I'm not even sure I'll be able to recover from this one. This series is clever and masterful and sucks the reader in to a world that's nearly impossible to survive, and the author has a task ahead of her of monumental proportions. Still, I'll be waiting on the edge of my seat for whatever she writes next because I know it will outdo any of my expectations.

A magnificent addition to the series

Violet Sorrngail was meant to die before she even finished her first year at Basgiath War College, especially when faced with Threshing. However, when she passes, she realizes how difficult and arduous training with a dragon can be.
However, she receives help from her friends and from the most unpredictable sources.

Still, the new vice commandant seems to have it out for her and those who surround her - those whose secrets she's been keeping, those who are as curious as she is about the darkest secret lying within the bowls of the college.

Though Violet’s body might be more fragile than her classmates and friends, her will is iron, and dragons don't follow the rules of humans. While he is determined to break her in so many ways in search of the information that will destory her newfound friends, her determination to keep them safe will be the only way she might survive - that and the strength of her friendships.

It is always a joy to feel invested in the lives of those I'm reading about in the stories I love, and I felt completely invested in the lives of all of these characters. I was brought to the point of tears and felt my stomach drop as though on a rollercoaster. This was not only suspenseful but heartrending, and I loved every minute of it. That cliffhanger was unexpected and mind-blowing, and I know I'll need a breath before I can read the next story.

I enjoyed the story. it was a bit like a Cinderella/enemies to lovers take that made me smile a lot.

Love will find a way

Noah and Lily are so naive when it comes to love. They are each afraid the other isn't feeling what they're feeling, and isn't that normal for new(ish) love? It's just so sweet how they come to the realization the their feelings are reciprocated and how much being involved with each other could ruin something that Noah has been working for all of his life.

I found it interesting that the characters began to delve into the reasoning behind why they were truly fighting the affection they felt for each other and that it was much more deep-seated than they realized.

This is one of those stories I carried with me while I exercised in the evenings, so I got to listen to pieces of it at a time. I found myself looking forward to the next excerpt I'd get to listen to after I arrived home each evening. It had me looking forward to the next book.

Sweet love

Simon and Juliet are adorable in the way they both seem to be figuring out what it's like to truly be in love. they made me smile, Brooke my heart, made me want to shake them, and ultimately have me a joyful read.
I loved how personal their lives were and how emotional they both felt about even the smallest things. it was just a fun read, and I look forward to the next one.

Wicked forbidden attraction

Clara doesn't mean to do what she does when she goes hunting for her starving family, and she's sure she's covered her tracks. However, when she comes home to find the vampire Alaric discussing a debt her father owes, she finds herself feeling self-conscious. Alaric truly didn't care about the debt owed to him by Clara's father, and truth be told, he has never had an interest in the yearly Claiming the rest of the vampires take part in until she meets Clara. When he returns to collect on the debt owed by her father, Clara sacrifices herself to save her sister.
He wants to hate her, feels such anger toward her that he may not even get her back to his home before he destroys her. But then she saves a young girl from drowning at the risk of her own life, and it begins to spin them both into another direction, He knows he needs to claim her, and she refuses to be claimed. How will he keep her safe as they both fight the attraction building between them?

It was a sexy, edgy story that kept me on my toes. Clara is independent but tends to get herself into trouble constantly, nearly ending up dead several times throughout the story. Alaric is suave and sexy and as dangerous as they come. And yet, he has a caring side that Clara seems to draw out of him. Though the story moved a little slow at times and the fact that Clara kept taking unnecessary risks got on my last nerve, I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Purrrfectly sexy

Kade is a strong panther shifter who moves into Nightwind territory with his brothers, hoping for a new start, a place of acceptance, and a home for the women the tight-knit family has been rescuing along the way. He never travels without bringing trouble along, and that's what he finds in the form of a sexy woman who's only looking for a one-night-stand.

Lauren recently discovered her fiance has been cheating on her while he's been stationed out of the state. It's such a blow to her self-esteem that she decides to drown her sorrows at the bar where her best friend works. When tall, dark, and broody comes walking in, she makes another choice for something she's never done before. She approaches him for a one-night-stand, and he accepts. Neither of the knows what this moment will mean to their future, but Kade soon discovers this time, trouble comes in a small, sexy package that has them both craving more even as their world explodes around them.

I think as soon as the Riley brothers entered the picture, I wanted Kade's story, and this didn't disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was sexy and dangerous, and I was definitely not disappointed. One of my favorite things about this story was how strong Lauren was. She was a fast thinker and still found time to be concerned about all those around her. I just hope the authors write another one soon.

Great story but a difficult read

Cooper Sullivan doesn't have the best home life in New York, and this tale begins with the first summer his parents sent him to stay with his grandparents in South Dakota on their ranch. He becomes fast friends with one of the neighbors - Lil Chance, and discovers that she's a tomboy who's fun to hang out with and has a lot of the same interests as he does. She also has a love for the land and the animals who live on it, especially a certain cougar, which is why she has known from a young age that she wants to give those animals a sanctuary.

Lil and Coop share many of her firsts, but a time comes when there are no more summers together. When his grandfather has an accident that leaves him unable to run the ranch, Cooper returns to the Black Hills ranch and decides to stay. Now an adult, he's also decided to win back the heart of the girl he left behind. However, it won't be easy because she's still heartbroken.

When strange things begin to happen around Chance Wildlife Refuge, they'll have to work together to figure out why these things are happening and why they are becoming more dangerous. Something much more dangerous than the wildlife lurks in the hills surrounding them, something that goes back to a discovery the two made as children, and it set off a chain of events that may cost Lil's life.

I love a good second-chance romance, and this one had all the ingredients to become one of the best. However, the writing just wasn't well done. The sentences were stilted and broke dozens of grammatical rules, and because of this, it read like all of the characters had the same voice, In fact, many of them even spoke alike. It was frustrating. Add to that the head-hopping I've found in other books of hers, and I was left confused about who was speaking several times throughout the story.
It had such great bones, and the story was so well-thought-out. I'm so disappointed that it wasn't told better.

Sexy and Exciting

Shannon is kidnapped by young wolf shifters who scented the puma she carries in her genes, and they plan on having a game of chase in the woods before they destroy her. However, being only 1/4 puma, she lacks the ability to shift and doesn't experience many of the other things shifters of her race carry. When Anton, the shifter who will inherit the alpha position in his pack, comes across these rebels, he chases them away and saves the beautiful woman with the blood of his natural enemy. She has nowhere safe to hide, so he takes it upon himself to become her protector. Yet, the more time they spend together, the more they find themselves attracted to each other. The problem involves more than them being of different species because someone is abusing power to attempt to bring Anton to heel and rid the pack of the pesky puma.

I enjoyed this story as I do all of Laurann's books. It gave me so many anxious moments and kept me on the edge of my seat. Anton is everything I'd expect from an arrogant alpha, but Shannon had so much strength and a bit of her own. It was a fun and sexy read.

Steamy and exciting

Brit, a therapist who works with mostly rodeo riders who have been hurt, meets just such a rider when she's sent out to help him with a knee injury after he rode a bull. She's tough, has had to be, and she's hiding a lot of secrets. However, something about River Raine makes her insides flip and has her wanting to do more than simple therapy with him. And River, a man who has had his share of women while riding the circuit, finds himself mesmerized by this beautiful woman.

When her past catches up with her, River Raine decides breaking this wild woman will have to take second place to protecting her - not just from those after her but from herself. For someone who has left a string of broken hearts behind him, this is new territory, and he'll do whatever it takes to hang onto this one. Even if it puts her in even more danger.

I really liked the story and enjoyed the way the tale unfolded. I have always liked a strong heroine, and Brit has a lot of strength. I love how nonchalant River is about his life and his family. It gives him a more down-to-earth feel.
The coincidences were fun, and the fire between these two characters sizzled. It's got a lot more sex in it than I'm used to reading from this author, but it didn't detract from the story itself. I will have to go back and read the first book in the series before moving on to the book #3.
