nothing new / robotic and incorrect narration

Hours into this, I haven’t heard anything new. If one is looking for a quick ride through the Revolution, then, OK, this book is fine. But the critic reviews made it seem as if this offered something new. Also, the narrator sounds like an AI voice. I know he’s not, but that doesn’t help the monotony.

Most egregiously, after listening to 300+ titles, no audiobook I've heard has as many pronunciation errors as this title. It's hard to believe how many simple words are mispronounced. This is, ultimately, on the producer of the title. However, the narrator should be ashamed.

Disappointed

For me, far too much of the text consists of background details that do not move the story forwards. Also, despite all the details about him and God, David is a paper-thin character.

Not Bad: Two things

1. Richard Matheson & Shirley Jackson should get a co-write.
2. You could make a drinking game from this book. Every time it says someone "licked her lip" "or "licked his lip" before speaking, take a drink. Be prepared to have someone else drive you home by the end. Seriously, though, the frequency of this phenomenon in the book is a failure by the editor.
3. The narrator did a great job with April's accent

A richly detailed narrative with just enough Biblical mysticism to keep things interesting. I wish Tomas and Little Moon had more adventures to hear about.

Disappointing Entry

I was really disappointed, as I’m a big fan of Nevill’s The Reddening and The Ritual. The book at hands is essentially a kidnapping story dressed up as an alien invasion version of The Last Man on Earth / I Am Legend. Unfortunately, by trying to be two things, the book succeeds at being neither. Even without the identity crisis, it wouldn’t have succeeded due to a writing style that can only be called an avalanche of exposition that does nothing in service of the plot such that it is. I’m hoping for better next time.

This is, without any doubt, simultaneously the scariest and saddest thing I have ever read. I was raised during the Cold War with all the threats of “the bomb” and nothing we were ever told or given to read was anything like this.

Odd Choices

Taryn's role sounds like it was voiced by a bad AI model of Terry Gross' voice, recorded over a speakerphone. Odd choice, that, given the other, much better performed (and EQ'd) roles.
The competition aspect of the story was very creative and interesting. The story got worse once the competition increasingly took backseat to describing two adults acting like a couple of horny teenagers. Neither Story nor Cole were well-developed / complicated enough characters to undo the damage of that trajectory.

coarse and lackluster

Swearing is an art where I grew up. But this book swears just to be coarse, not to communicate. There are better ways to demonstrate that a character is salt-of-the-earth than to have them swear incessantly and/or have the humor of a fifth grade boy. And not all uneducated persons are rabidly profane or sophomoric.
If the stories’ narratives went somewhere, maybe it’d be worth suffering through the vocabulary. But, this seems to be a collection where decent ideas went to die. There is no payoff at the stories’ ends. None of them. Maybe that’s the horror the cover art promises.
