Historia
A Navy captain near the end of a decorated career, Stephen Rensselaer is disciplined, intelligent, and determined always to do what’s right. In defending the development of a new variant of warship, he makes an enemy of the president of the United States, who assigns him to command the doomed line’s only prototype—Athena, Patrol Coastal 15—with the intent to humiliate a man who should have been an admiral. Rather than resign, Rensselaer takes the new assignment in stride.

Transporting and poetic
Revisado: 02-28-25
I brought three books on the midwinter holiday from cold rainy Washington to the central coast of california, planning to read each story. the audio version of this book was included in my purchase and I spent the entire visit swept up in this unusually well written and superbly performed story. Mark helprin has never failed to capture me and this did not disappoint. the other two typos remain untouched but will become part of my bedtime reading when I return home.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Revisado: 11-30-24
I am 80 something who has fly fished around the world, and who has as the author has written, put it all back to the rear of the closet like a loved sweater. But Mr scoggins makes it possible to take it all out and relive my own memories once more and do it with all the joy and none of the angst.

Historia
On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic.

A classic, important work read with astonishing clarity and interpretation. Even though I have held what I thought was a reasonable appreciation for our natural world, this presentation reawakened me to the glory of our land and the importance of revisiting my duty to better understand and care for it. 🥰

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."
