Historia
London, 1992. Late one night, Edward Crane, 76, is declared dead at a London hospital. An obituary describes him only as a 'resourceful career diplomat'. But Crane was much more than that—and the circumstances surrounding his death are far from what they seem. Fifteen years later, academic Sam Gaddis needs money. When a journalist friend asks for his help researching a possible sixth member of the notorious Trinity spy ring, Gaddis knows that she's onto a story that could turn his fortunes around. But within hours the journalist is dead, apparently from a heart attack.

The Cambridge Five. Need one say more...
Revisado: 02-19-22
I am only on chapter 16 and I felt must indeed post my joy in listening to the book. For you lovers of old-school spy novels that delve into the Cambridge Five and can appreciate a touch of the modern world, well, this book is for you. First-rate I say, with lots of puns and witty writing that puts one in the essence of the scene.
Realpolitik and Moscow rules. hehe. To be sure.

Enjoyable, informative with lots of information
Revisado: 10-09-21
Here is what one person wrote,
"Simply a joy from beginning to end. Entertaining, broad, deep, and filled with anecdotes and personal fates and stories.Pretty much a complete story on the subject."
I couldn't agree more. The narrator has a British accent which I think fits well with the telling of the tales. I've my share of reading on the subject and this book covers stories that I know about along with new insights into the would of espionage.
And I didn't find it tedious at all.

But instead, he finds himself working alongside Wernher von Braun, launching V2 rockets at London for the Nazis from a bleak seaside town in occupied Holland. As the SS increases its scrutiny of the project, Graf, an engineer more than a soldier, has to muster all of his willpower to toe the party line. And when rumors of a defector circulate through the German ranks, Graf becomes a prime suspect.

Revisado: 08-15-21
Yes, it was a most enjoyable read. I wasn't sure of what to expect but found the lives of the main characters interesting and I did learn new insights about the V2 program. Also, reading the novel did spur some additional interest in Von Braun.

Historia
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

Hilarious. The dry humor is the true killer
Revisado: 01-03-21
If you are a lover of murder, mystery, crime novels. I mean a true lover of all kinds. Well, this is for you. Had me at chapter 1. It may be dated. Well, yes cause it takes place in the not too distant past, but that is one of the joys about this tale of murder. And if you like Vira and the like, I say again. This is for you.
It's got all the familiar characters and I kid you not, I was completing sentences. But detective sergeant Sean Duff's dry wit is the true killer in this story. Would love to watch this on Netflix. Also, why this is good as an audiobook? Gerard Doyle reads in an Irish accent. I wouldn't have it any other way. If I was reading this via a book, I am sure some of the ambiance would be lost. I've lived in Boston, as well, so I do know something about the "Troubles". Also viewing the town of Carrickfergus on google maps as I listen. I do know where the bottom of Victoria Rd is.
Most enjoyable and I am only on Chapter 4, but I felt I just had to say something to somebody And that somebody was you. Enjoy..

Historia
When Paris Sizzled vividly portrays the City of Light during the fabulous 1920s, les Annees folles, when Parisians emerged from the horrors of war to find that a new world greeted them - one that reverberated with the hard metallic clang of the assembly line, the roar of automobiles, and the beat of jazz. Mary McAuliffe traces a decade that saw seismic change on almost every front, from art and architecture to music, literature, fashion, entertainment, transportation, and, most notably, behavior.

Ah, Paris in the 20s....
Revisado: 10-08-20
Love this period of time and would have enjoyed being a fly on the wall at many of the events. The book is a behind the scene tell-all about the lives of colorful characters. There are many names I am familiar with and some that are new to me. If you enjoy reading about Berlin during the time of the Weimar Republic, then you should enjoy this book. Hold on to your hat, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Goes hand in hand with Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris.

Historia
While the Germans knew an invasion was inevitable, no one knew where or when it would fall. Those manning Hitler's mighty Atlantic Wall may have felt secure in their bunkers, but they had no conception of the fury and fire that was about to break. After the initial assaults of June established an Allied bridgehead, a state of stalemate prevailed. The Germans fought with great courage - hindered by lack of supplies and overwhelming Allied control of the air. This book describes the catastrophe that followed, in a unique look at the war from the losing side.

Revisado: 10-08-20
Over the years I have read many books on WWII. The books I have read, have mostly been from the American or allied point of view. Recently, I’ve started reading books that look on that piece of history from the opponent’s perspective, which makes a more enlightened regard of the subject. This book confirms what I have learned over the years and also add new knowledge to that learning along with dismissing certain myths. Upon reading the last chapter, one major revelation this book has revealed for me is how the allied powers faired in operation Market Garden and where taken completely by surprise in what ended up being called the Battle of the Bulge.

Historia
In Let Them Eat Tweets, best-selling political scientists Jacob S. Hacker and Paul Pierson offer a definitive answer: the Republican Party serves its plutocratic masters to a degree without precedent in modern global history. Conservative parties, by their nature, almost always side with the rich. But when faced with popular resistance, they usually make concessions, allowing some policies that benefit the working and middle classes. After all, how can a political party maintain power in a democracy if it serves only the interests of a narrow and wealthy slice of society?

Another great read - and many great one liners
Revisado: 06-14-20
Wow, I really enjoyed this book. Seemingly, I can’t get enough of that Philip Marlowe storied life of love & lust, murder, and intrigue. With the basis or backdrop of WW2 and the Weimar Republic. I love the way Burnie sizes up the situation and tell it like it is. He’s a man with principles and won’t finish the job until it’s complete.
Yet another story of murder set the past and the past, past with a cast of characters be they fictional or real. Take Gerdy Troost, for example. When I heard that name I went like, wow, who has a name like that? Then I looked it up. There was such a person and it’s not hard to imagine that dialog coming out of her mouth. There are other characters of the Nazi regime as well. Intriguing band of cutthroats they are. And Kerr brings them to life.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

A most enjoyable read. To be sure.
Revisado: 06-14-20
First, the author. I’ve read two of Erik Larson’s books before and they were grand. I like his subject matter and enjoy his writing.
Second, the narrator. I’ve read/listened to the Burnie Gunther book series written by Philip Kerr and narrated by John Lee so call me bias. But I love his voice, think he does a great job of defining characters and believe (at least for me) he increases the enjoyment level of whatever book he is reading.
Third, the book. Grand! Most enjoyable! A great read! I learned a thing or two and enjoyed the telling of this story form it’s given perspective. I’ve read many books on Churchill and WW2 and know about the many events that transpire in the book. So, reading about those same events from another perspective was most enjoyable. I highly recommend this book. I have to admit I did feel a little nostalgic for that catastrophic up upheaval of WW2.

Greece, 1940. Not sunny vacation Greece: northern Greece, Macedonian Greece, Balkan Greece, the city of Salonika. In that ancient port, with its wharves and warehouses, dark lanes and Turkish mansions, brothels and tavernas, a tense political drama is being played out. On the northern border, the Greek army has blocked Mussolini's invasion, pushing his divisions back to Albania, the first defeat suffered by the Nazis, who have conquered most of Europe.

Most Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-06-20
Most Enjoyable to be sure. Daniel Gerroll's reading was suburb and the story is a good yarn about a slice of WWII that takes place mostly in Thessaloniki, Greece. I've recently spent some time in the Balkans, mostly Albania but always a neat feeling when the story takes place in cities one is familiar with. It's got suspense, love, and danger with the familiar cast of characters you should know and love if you've read other war novels. And there are some great passages of prose mixed in with all the drama. A good read to be sure.
