Authoritative and immediate, this is the classic account of the most powerful of the American Indian tribes. T. R. Fehrenbach traces the Comanches' rise to power, from their prehistoric origins to their domination of the high plains for more than a century until their demise in the face of Anglo-American expansion.

TEXAS ADOPTED COMANCHE SPIRIT
Revisado: 12-14-24
To defeat the Comanche Texas Rangers inhabited the spirit of their aggressive opponents. I have long been impressed with the Texas Rangers history. Not until I listened to the history of the Comanche did I realize that they were the first Texas Rangers! By their ferocity and quick action they repelled all threats. Apaches ran from the Comanches but to all others they were known as enemies.
When the Texas Rangers were involved in the war with Mexico they were called THE DEVIL TEXANOS. SAME TACTICS AS COMANCHES rolled back Mexican resistance. The Mexican army was not afraid of the American army! No one wanted to fight Comanches or Texas Rangers for the same reasons.

Historia
Even among iconic frontiersmen like John C. Fremont, Kit Carson, and Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger stands out. A mountain man of the American West, straddling the fur trade era and the age of exploration, he lived the life legends are made of. Here, in a biography that finally gives this outsize character his due, Jerry Enzler takes this frontiersman's full measure for the first time—and tells a story that would do Jim Bridger proud.

JIM BRIDGER A CHARACTER WITH CHARACTER
Revisado: 07-18-24
I loved the humble man who was schooled in his life as a trapper and graduated valedictorian. He mastered the art of friendship with many of the indigenous tribes but even his enemies respected him.
He lived with a map of the west in his mind and attempted to create a world where all the cultures could respect each other’s boundaries.
Bridger’s storytelling created legends of the west that shaped the culture that he stood for. His tales of Yellowstone were inspired by truth yet his embellishments led the public to conclude the area was a mountain man’s fantasy.
Jim Bridger’s legacy developed the CODE OF THE WEST!
The narrator was excellent!

The true story (on which the film Jeremiah Johnson was partially based) of John Johnson, who in 1847 found his wife and her unborn child had been killed by Crow braves. Out of this tragedy came one of the most gripping feuds - one man against a whole tribe - in American history.

The legend of the Crow Killer
Revisado: 06-17-24
I have been interested in mountain men since I first saw Jeremiah Johnson. This book and the narrator ring true to the spirit of the mountain men and their time. Many of these men were talented storytellers and sincerely believed that they had the duty to keep their heroes alive.
I have enjoyed the book because it has been written and illustrated with great enthusiasm. All legends have their own unique qualities that we wish were accurate.
The beaver trade was finished in the middle 1840’s and living in the harsh conditions of the intermountain west for even 20 years outdoors was not likely.
The mention of most of the great mountain men added a sense of reality but by the start of this period most trappers were looking for jobs as guides.

Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson. Before they were household names, these budding legends called Sue’s Nashville apartment—lovingly dubbed the “Boar’s Nest”—home. Sue’s place was an intimate staging ground where a new breed of singer-songwriters—wounded souls, wayward upstarts—would spur each other on to tap into something bigger, realer.

Creativity abounds when it is supported not suppressed
Revisado: 04-20-24
I have been a fan of all the subjects of this group. It’s refreshing to hear the synthesis of their becoming great artists was a mother figure that loved them all for their potential to break her heart with their songs.
I have always loved Willie’s voice singing what his heart and soul reveal. His timing is not normal but it speaks to my soul. Patsy Cline made Crazy my song. Willie sang Crazy at a higher level even with his Texas twang and hole ridden guitar my soul reacts to that sound with pleasure and passion. The weed is the difference between love and loss of control caused by pills and alcohol.
No artist can seem to stay up mentally and emotionally without some substance abuse issues that they have to handle due to the demands of their work load.
The scope of this work is limited to the synthesis of a specific few artists who were termed “outlaws” that were destined to influence the future of country music. Their momma piggy created a safe zone where they could enjoy the synergy of their combined talents as they grew away from their original life styles. The Boars’ Nest was a place to find support and friendly relationships as each artist left every thing for their future status as superstars.

Best history of the time I’ve heard. I have no problem with the performance. The story is over due! Amazing an ex-Texas Ranger looks after Native American people at the mercy of the upstanding citizens up to no good!

Historia
Is Atheism Dead? is an entertaining, impressively wide-ranging, and decidedly provocative answer to that famous 1966 Time cover that itself provocatively asked “Is God Dead?” In a voice that is by turns witty, muscular, and poetic, Metaxas intentionally echoes C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton in cheerfully and logically making his astonishing case, along the way presenting breathtaking - and often withering - new evidence and arguments against the idea of a Creatorless universe.

Historia
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.

Shelby Foote’s work is impressive on multiple levels leaving the impression of the past on the listener
Revisado: 05-16-23
Foote’s work on the Civil War is so compelling that you feel what others witnessed during the day. How history touched the lives of the people and how they observed or participated in the war in the four brutal years before and after the actual events examined.
I was born in the south right at the end of WWll and the all encompassing time I witnessed as I grew up feels similar to this book!
Total War impacts every thing and every one. Shelby Foote brings it all, details of battle, fatigue, joy, defeat, torment and delusions shared as historical events change during the long conflict.
You can become a witness as well as the drama unfolds in your mind supplied with facts and feelings from the past.
If you are willing to devote over 150 hours to get a personal experience of the Civil War period Shelby Foote is present through a great presentation to deliver!

Historia
In this riveting landmark autobiography, which reads like a novel, Academy Award and Emmy winner Louis Gossett, Jr., masterfully transports us to 1840s New York; Washington, D.C.; and Louisiana to experience the kidnapping and 12 years of bondage of Solomon Northup, a free man of color. Twelve Years a Slave, published in 1853, was an immediate bombshell in the national debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War.

Solomon’s spirit Exhibits the Master’s touch
Revisado: 09-24-22
This autobiography of Solomon Northrop is surprisingly void of vitriol found in today’s society demanding reparations for slavery.
Solomon relates epic details of his life and work as a slave. Not only the emotional trauma I expected but the details of every day life on a plantation from 1841 to 1853.
Solomon’s detailed recollection brings to life his tragedy as it evolves from helplessness to hopelessness to a point that he is willing to trust God’s mercy for his condition.
I have great admiration for this man’s sense of character and will to show God’s love in the face of pure evil.
In his own life time Solomon’s story was not well received. My prayers are that present hearts will find that same courage in our stressful race relationship.
I recommend this book to anyone with an open mind and heart.

Audie Murphy was a desperately poor eighteen-year-old orphan when he joined the Army, nineteen when he first saw a buddy die from an enemy bullet and an enemy die from one of his own. By VE day, he had killed at least 240 Germans, had single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and had become the most decorated soldier in American history, winning every medal his country offered, including the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Revisado: 10-27-21
My dad was from Texas but he didn’t know Murph. I heard a lot about it when he talked with my uncles. They talked with each other like the dialogue in this book. Murph was exceptional for his age probably because he was an orphan and learned how to look after himself.
I recommend this book, it’s real and well written. I was ready for RnR at the end just like Murph!
