Historia
A brilliant and moving novel about celebrity, sexual power, and a daughter’s search to understand her mother’s hidden truths. Bringing to life two generations of women with difficult sexual histories, both assaulted and silenced, both finding - or failing to find - their powers of recovery, Actress touches a raw and timely nerve. With virtuosic storytelling and in prose at turns lyrical and knife-sharp, Enright takes readers to the heart of the maddening yet tender love that binds a mother and daughter.

Beautiful

A beautiful novel, full of Irish irony and insights. Read by the author, which, in this rare case, is excellent.

Stranded at boarding school, his vulnerability attracts his piano teacher, Miriam Cornell, leaving scars as well as a memory of love that will never fade. Beyond AWFUL
Revisado: 01-25-23
I never thought I'd say this about a McEwan novel (I have always loved his work) but this novel is truly awful. There is no topic of history and politics in the last 100 years that is not touched upon, in detail or in passing. The story meanders about to no purpose. The characters are not well drawn and, even at two thirds through the novel(the point at which I abandoned it), were still made of cardboard. This is a showy and ostentatious attempt by McEwan, riding on his much merited earlier fame, to impress, even to shock his readers with a plot that makes no sense and great speeches which play at being philosophical. I hated almost every moment of it.
The narration is equally revolting. McBurney declaims the text, rather than merely reading it. No nuances, and the different voices all merge into one.
Avoid this novel and this reading at all costs!

Historia
Born to elegant but frivolous parents, Harriet grows up ignored and unguided, and retains a curious innocence that neither her marriage to Freddie Lytton, nor her friendship with the beautiful Tessa can dispel. Freddie is far older than she is - a companion rather than a lover - and slightly disapproving of Tessa and her irresponsible, attractive husband, Jack. Yet all four are bound together: by their backgrounds, their children, by Harriet’s unspoken feelings for Jack and by the tragedy that lies in wait for all of them.

Historia
A man with a borrowed name steps from a flashy red sports car—also borrowed—onto the estate of his youth. But all is not as it seems. There is a new family living in the drafty old house: the Godleys, descendants of the late, world-famous scientist Adam Godley, whose theory of existence threw the universe into chaos. And this mystery man, who has just completed a prison sentence, feels as if time has stopped, or was torn, or was opened in new and strange ways. He must now vie with the idiosyncratic Godley family, and with a woman from his past who comes bearing an unusual request.

Impossible
Revisado: 10-28-22
After waiting with special enthusiasm for this novel from one of my favourite authors, I was severely disappointed. I lost the plot about a quarter way through. It is extremely and unnecessarily elaborate, with much philosophizing over nonsense along the way. Seems to get denser and duller. The narration is sometimes histrionic and, how to put it?, overly self-conscious, the narrator being a sort of godhead looking down on the world below. I thought it was pretentious and boring. I'll give it another try again some time, but at present cannot recommend it.

Historia
The year is 1794, and Fritz - passionate, idealistic and brilliant - is seeking his father's permission to announce his engagement to his heart's desire: 12-year-old Sophie. His astounded family and friends are amused and disturbed by his betrothal. What can he be thinking? Tracing the dramatic early years of the young German who was to become the great romantic poet and philosopher Novalis, The Blue Flower is a masterpiece of invention, evoking the past with a reality that we can almost feel.

A COLOSSAL BORE
Revisado: 07-16-22
A tale full of precocious children and irritating adolescents, all rendered (with the exception of the characters' voices) in a relentlessly sing-song narration. Seriously not worth the effort. The overblown introduction is even more outrageously ridiculous and pretentious than the novel itself. Avoid at all costs.

Historia
A novel about human relationships, focusing, unusually for Brookner, on two male characters. Hartmann and Fibich met at school and 40 years later they can no more think of living apart than of divorcing their wives. This book deals with their gradual coming to terms with the emotional gaps in their lives.
