Historia
Isabelle Shelton has always found comfort in the predictable world of her mother’s dressmaking shop, Mrs. Shelton’s Fashions, while her sister Sylvia turned her back on the family years ago to marry a wealthy doctor whom Izzie detests. When their mother dies unexpectedly, the sisters are stunned to find they’ve jointly inherited the family business. Izzie is determined to buy Sylvia out, but when she’s conscripted into the WAAF, she’s forced to seek Sylvia’s help to keep the shop open.

Revisado: 03-12-25
Loved this. I attended a lecture by Julia Kelly & picked up this book as a result. Ms Kelly really did an amazing job of research so that all the details both as a dressmaker & during this period in history are accurate! Because I’m a dressmaker inaccurate or sloppy details related to the stitching knock me right out of the story. The relationship of the two sisters is told with such compassion for all the reasons they each made decisions throughout the story and brought it all to a lovely and satisfying end. 10/10 highly recommend. I read the audible edition and the narration was first rate!

Historia
Phryne Fisher, scented and surprisingly ruthless, is not one to let sleuthing a horrific crime get in the way of an elegant dalliance. The redoubtable Phryne Fisher is holidaying at Cave House, a Gothic mansion in the heart of the Victorian mountain country. But the peaceful country surroundings mask danger. Her host is receiving death threats, lethal traps are set without explanation around the house and the parlour maid is found strangled to death.

Love the fun wicked & charming 1920’s vibe. Great to take on racism as part of the story & the nods to classic Christie mysteries is fun.

I’ve loved this whole series of Maisie Dobbs novels. While I’m sad to see it end, it was a lovely wrap up with all the ends neatly tidied away just like a Maisie Dobbs case.

Love this retelling with such a lot of actual history that’s been buried. Telling a good story is such a powerful way to transmit information. Excellent characters & solid storytelling make for an engaging read.

Beautiful blend of historical& mystery with compelling characters
Revisado: 05-24-24
Love the setting, it’s one of my favourites. The main character is charming, bold, and clever. The mystery held til the last chapter when I finally guessed. The writing is vivid and colourful. The voice actor is excellent & carries the story solidly. Highly recommend this book if you like historical mysteries!

Love this take on Elemental work
Revisado: 05-19-24
The story is good, slow start but worth staying with it. I love the Elemenal work & the distinction from witchcraft. This book as a bit of a Steampunk feel. I don’t love the narrator, his voices have a slightly clunky feel to them.

An apprenticeship with a struggling swordmaker in Scotland is a chance to use her expertise and discover what she's capable of. And it turns out that she excels at aggravating her gruff silver-fox boss, when she's not having inappropriate fantasies about his sexy Scottish burr.

One of Alyssa Cole’s less good novels
Revisado: 11-16-23
I usually like Cole’s novel, however this one has poor research on British and Scottish everything, Slang was weird and not Scottish, but sort of British, and the underlying principle of a bastard son of a Duke having any claim to the title is so far off of what happens in the strongly patriarchal system of titled lords in the UK. The narrator was pretty good except when trying for a Scots accent, that was pretty bad and dragged me out of the story. I really liked the immigration issue being a central one and addressing the aristocracy’s horrific track record on that. Overall some good, and I did finish it, but had definite problems.

Well written and the magic was not overdone, nor was the love story. Enjoyed it and didn’t always see the next plot turn. Narrator did an excellent job of keeping the story moving and clearly identifying each character.
